Product Review: Bebe Sounds Fetal Monitor

Amber S.
When looking for a device with which to hear the sounds of your baby's heartbeat at home, check out the Bebe Sounds Fetal Monitor. This product works better than a stethoscope or fetoscope and is much safer to use than a Doppler. The price is also excellent. What's not to like?

I did not originally intend to purchase this product. When researching it online, I read several reviews. Almost all of them claimed that the product did not work at all. Others claimed that it worked poorly at best. My mother found a used one for free and gave it to me, so I decided to try it for myself.

Clearly, those who gave the product a poor review did not understand how to use the monitor. I have used it on many occasions when my baby was in every conceivable position and have never not been able to find a clear, distinct, and loud heartbeat. Even with the baby facing forward, I have had no trouble with this product.

The Bebe Sounds Fetal Monitor comes with two pair of headphones so that your partner may listen to the baby's heartbeat with you. There are two controls: an on button and a volume control.

Some critics commented that outside noises were too easily picked up by the Bebe Sounds monitor, but my home is very noisy and I have never been able to pick up any outside noises while using the machine. Even my voice is not picked up when talking and using the monitor at the same time. The only outside sounds that the monitor does pick up are those in the immediate area to the machine such as digestive noises, blood flowing through arteries, and my hand rubbing the machine. The Bebe Sounds Monitor is quite precise in my opinion and is just as easy if not easier to use than a Doppler.

Another complaint I read about the machine was that you cannot hear a fetal heartbeat with the monitor unless you are at or near the end of your pregnancy. This is also untrue as I first used the machine halfway through my pregnancy and could always hear a strong heartbeat.

I recommend the Bebe Sounds Fetal Monitor for its safety and ease of use. This monitor is much easier to use than a stethoscope or fetoscope. It is also much safer than a Doppler which uses continuous wave ultrasound and, as some studies show, may be harmful to an unborn fetus. The Bebe Sounds Monitor uses no ultrasound waves. It only picks up the baby's heartbeat with a microphone and amplifies it via headphones to make it clearly audible.

The only reason you may have trouble with the Bebe Sounds monitor is if you have an anterior placenta or if the baby is still very tiny and does not yet have an audible heartbeat. Other than that, the machine functions beautifully. The price is very low as well, so there is no reason not to buy one for yourself and give it a try. You will have hours of fun listening to the sounds of your baby's heartbeat. Kids will love it too for listening to their own body's sounds and heartbeat.
