Product Review: Bitter Apple (R) Spray : Saving Appliances and Pet Lives

Pets that Chew and Lick What They Shouldn't: Getting it Under Control

Slate Stone
How would you like to bite into a bitter apple? Likely you would cringe and spit it out. The Grannick's who invented the original Bitter Apple (R) Spray in the 1960's designed their formula to discourage cats and dogs from biting, licking, chewing and eating what they shouldn't be. And thank goodness for pet owners everywhere such a clever product was made. Bitter Apple (R) Spray leaves an unpleasant yet harmless taste to keep your furry friends from putting their mouth where they shouldn't be.

There are a multitude of uses for Bitter Apple (R) Spray that not only could save your cat or dog's life, but also save you thousands of dollars. Bitter Apple (R) Spray helps prevent cats and dogs from biting on wires and cords. Think of all the wires and cords you have on expensive equipment and appliances in your house from computers and printers and stereo and television equipment to boom boxes and radios and DVD players to electric toothbrush to kitchen counter toaster, coffee maker and so on. Maybe you have a dehumidifier or fans set up in your house. Or maybe you have an IPod or MP3 player or headphones lying around. All these things are like bull's-eye targets to the quirky cat or dog that salivates at the thought of discovering something chewable or a potential toy. Many cats and dogs are attracted to shiny things like vinyl and rubber and plastic and appliance and gadget wires fit just the bill. They are exciting to look at if you are a mischievous cat or dog or just plain curious. Having chewed wires can not only render your equipment unsafe, or worse yet, destroyed, but also you literally put your cat or dog's life at risk by being vulnerable to electric shock. Bitter Apple (R) Spray is the solution that will deter your pet from wanting to chew up what he should not.

I have been using Bitter Apple (R) Spray for more than 2 decades and would never even dream of bringing a new appliance into my living space without giving the cords a good spray. It really does work. I have seen unsprayed wires get chewed and those sprayed with Bitter Apple (R) Spray remain untouched by cat and dog teeth. It is amazing and I am impressed with the effectiveness of this great product.

When I spray a cord or wire with Bitter Apple (R) Spray, I naturally have the product unplugged. I lay the cord on a thick towel and spray it generously on all sides. You need to be patient to thoroughly cost it. The reason I use a towel is so I don't create a mess or leave liquid on the floor. It is a protective measure so you don't potentially damage or stain your carpet or flooring. I also spray the "goods" in a room my pets have no access to, so it remains undisturbed. I give the sprayed item 24 hours to thoroughly dry, and although it probably does not need another coat, I give it another coating of Bitter Apple (R) Spray for good measure. Your cat or dog may be twice as evil as the average pet (I say evil affectionately, because it is just natural for pets to be curious and playful). Using 2 coats of Bitter Apple (R) Spray may be overkill, but I figure it is twice as strong and lasts twice as long.

The ingredients of Grannick's Bitter Apple (R) Spray are

Water, isopropanol 20%, bitter principles, and extractives.

Grannick's Bitter Apple (R) Spray is sold in 8 ounce and 32 ounce sizes, and also in a one gallon refill size. It has a starting price of about $5 and you can buy it in pet stores like PetSmart, PetCo, and some discount department stores that sell pet food. Your veterinarian's office probably sells it as well, but likely it will be high priced than online or at large pet food retail store.

NOT just for wires

Grannick's Bitter Apple (R) Spray is also effective for use to discourage pets from fur biting and hair chewing.

All the Bitter Apple products leave an unpleasant yet harmless taste to keep your furry friend from putting their mouth where they shouldn't be.

Summary:

So if your pet is a gadget biter or has a bad habit of licking because of some nervous condition, then Grannick's Bitter Apple products with special formulas designed for different animals will not only help the problem, but for many pet owners, it solves the problem.

My pets do not bite any wires or cords since I starting using Grannick's Bitter Apple(R). As with any product, read the directions. You'll want to avoid getting this in your eyes, and keep out of the reach of children. Also, use common sense. If you are spraying your rubber coated equipment wires, you want to avoid spraying the metal parts. You don't want to spray your cat or dog and keep them from normal grooming. It is a product designed for problem areas. If you are unsure of what you can spray safely, it is always a good idea to contact the company first.

I bought this product to help train my new ferret to stop nipping, and instead he smelled it and took a chunk out of my hand! WTH!!! He latched on for a good few minutes and would NOT LET GO! Good thing my fiance was here to pry his mouth open so I could get my hand out. This is going right back to the store!
