Product Review: Blue Bunny Ice Cream

A Good Substitute for Blue Bell?

Elena H
Is it impossible to find a low fat, no sugar added ice cream that is a decent imitation of real ice cream?

Since both my husband and I have health issues and need to watch calories as well, I am always on a quest to find good food that is low in fat and sugar. That is not to say that we don't splurge once in a while (usually on the weekends). However, for our main diet through the week, I run a pretty tight kitchen. Still, we both really enjoy eating and do not deprive our "sweet tooth".

At out house, Blue Bunny Ice Cream is a "must have" every week. The flavor is really good and the nutrition, compared to regular ice cream, can't be beat. My flavor of choice is plain No Sugar Added Reduced Fat Vanilla. That is unusual for me and is only because I slather it with dark chocolate syrup. The fat content per serving is only 5 grams with 3 grams being saturated fat. The sugar content is low. There is a diabetic statement on the box that reads, "The Small Amount of Sugar Comes From Lactose Which is a Naturally Occurring Sugar in the Milk Used to Produce This Product". My elderly mom cannot go a day without her ice cream. Her favorite flavor is the No Sugar Added Reduced Fat Butter Pecan. This flavor has a very rich buttery taste. It only has 6 grams of fat with 3.5 grams being saturated fat. The fat and saturated fat in this ice cream is very low compared to other ice cream. The Butter Pecan has the same statement for diabetics as the Vanilla does. I have also found that foods that are safer for some diabetics are also better for us. Usually, the sugar in the foods that have a diabetic statement on the package, have sugar of a different kind and one that metabolizes differently in the body. This can be beneficial for anyone who watches their weight. There is no statement on the box that the ice cream contains an artificial sweetener like Equal or Splenda. While researching for this article, I found a coupon on the Blue Bunny website for $2.00 off of 2 of the 1.75 quart size. The price for the nearly 1/2 gallon size is very reasonable. I paid only $3.37 at Walmart.

I know that Blue Bunny ice cream bars have been previously reviewed on Associated Content and did not make the grade with the writer. I have also tried the low fat bars and disagree with the previous reviewer

If you have no concerns about cutting calories or about cutting your saturated fat, you may want to stick with your regular brand of "real" ice cream. But if you need to watch your weight and reduce the amount of sugar and saturated fat you consume, then try Blue Bunny Reduced Fat No Added Sugar Ice Cream.
