Product Review: Cambridge Silversmiths Studio William Home "Larch" Flatware

Kristen May
My husband and I purchased this "Larch" flatware set as newlyweds, and we absolutely love its unique look and balanced feel. Although it is not right for every home, it will add an artistic flair to your dining room that you can't get with your basic flatware set.

Studio William Home Larch Flatware Review: Appeal

The appeal of the Larch flatware set is that it is both curvy and functional. Visually, it stands out among other sets because the pieces have slightly curved ends, and because the forks only have three tines. The knives are also extremely elegant, with a very slim "waist" between the handle and the business end, and a beautifully curved design on the cutting end of the knife.

In addition to the visual appeal of Studio William's Larch flatware, it has a great weight. Each piece is very well balanced in the hand, and especially the knives have a substantial feel to them without being too heavy in comparison to the other utensils.

Studio William Home Larch Flatware Review: Durability

We have found that Studio William's Larch flatware passes the main durability test: the ice cream test. When scooping relatively hard ice cream with the tablespoons (or eating it out of the container with the teaspoons), none of our spoons have suffered any bending. In addition, all of the tines on our forks are still fully lined up

Studio William Home Larch Flatware Review: Hostess Set

The "service for 8" boxes come with a 5-piece hostess set consisting of a serving spoon, slotted serving spoon, serving fork, sauce spoon (or a milkshake spoon, depending on your desires), and a butter blade. Each of these pieces is well-crafted, including the highly clever serving fork that has five tines (they just couldn't throw in a piece with four tines, apparently). I find the sauce spoon to be much more functional than the typical scalloped sugar spoon, as it is very useful for getting salsa out of tall jars, or serving honey out of a large container.

Studio William Home Larch Flatware Review: Complaints

Our only complaint with the set is that because of its finish, it cannot be washed with lemon detergents, which (I assume) will make corrosion more likely. In addition, the recommended care is to not leave it soaking in water, and to dry immediately, which is completely unrealistic in any home. However, we have not had any problems with our set yet, and we expect it to last many years into the future.

Studio William Home Larch Flatware Review: Conclusion

In conclusion, this product gets an enthusiastic two thumbs up because of its artistic and unique look, along with its highly functional and enjoyable eating experience. The place settings look wonderful, with well-defined differences in size between the dinner and salad forks and the table and tea spoons. They will probably go with any dishes, because they look great with our white square dishes, which seems unusual due to their rounded shape. Therefore, I would highly recommend the Larch flatware to anybody looking for something a little more unusual to put on the table.
