Product Review: Campbell's Supper Bakes Traditional Roast Chicken with Stuffing

Donna Noble
Lately dinner in my house has become an occasion where meals come out of a box and all I have to do it toss the ingredients together and throw the dish in the oven for 30 minutes. I'm not complaining about this; my husband enjoys them, I like the taste, and the best part is that I don't have to hover in front of the stove waiting for dinner to burn or stick to the bottom of the pan. With so many of these prepackaged dinners on the market today the list of options is seemingly limitless. My latest venture into this type of dinner involved an encounter with Campbell's Supper Bakes Traditional Roast Chicken with stuffing

Preparation
Preparing this meal for the oven was simple and took less than five minutes from start to finish. In addition to the items in the package you need 1 1/3 cup of water and 1 - 1 ½ lbs of boneless skinless chicken breast, and of course a 9 x 13 baking dish. After gathering all the items I would need I began the preparation instructions as listed on the box. The first step was to mix the stuffing with the water and seasoning packet and push the stuffing to the middle of the pan. Secondly I placed the chicken breast (which I cut into chunks rather than leaving whole as instructed on the packaging) pieces along the sides of the stuffing mixture and covered the chicken with the sauce included in the package. The final step was to cover the chicken with the crumb topping included with the pre-packaged ingredients. I then placed my dish in the oven for 30 minutes.

Taste:
I'm not a big fan of stovetop stuffing which is exactly what the stuffing reminded me of. Parts of it were squishy and soggy while other parts were crispy. I tasted the seasoning packet that was mixed in with the stuffing prior to combining the ingredients. At that point the seasoning tasted like the seasoning packets found in ramen noodles, only not the chicken variety but the beef variety which seemed strange to me. Upon eating the prepared stuffing the taste was bland and not at all what I had expected. The chicken turned out well, of course in my opinion it's hard to mess up chicken. The taste of the sauce combines with the chicken was a vast improvement over the taste of the stuffing.

Tips:
I understand why the directions call for whole chicken breast as cutting them into chunks can cause the chicken to dry out if you are not careful. Also when combining the stuffing and water you may want to do this in a bowl so that you can thoroughly combine the ingredients.

Variations:
The Roast Chicken with Stuffing Supper Bakes can be prepared by substituting pork chops for chicken if you prefer pork. This meal can also be converted into Swiss Vegetable or Apple Raisin chicken by adding a few additional ingredients

Overall Quality:
Considering the meal took less than 35 minutes to prepare I am not overly upset that I did not like it as much as some of the other varieties. For less that $4 plus the price of chicken I was able to prepare a filling dinner that my husband enjoyed. I probably will pass this over the next time I am purchasing a Campbell's Supper Bakes meal, however I won't rule it out completely until I try some of the variations suggested on the packaging.
