Features
Featuring the Digic 4 Processor that many photographers adore, the SX20 IS is a fast camera that writes images to flash media rapidly. Image stabilization is provided for blur-free images, while the 2.5" LCD offers a variable-view feature, meaning that users can adequately view their photographs from multiple direction (via a built-in hinge).
Though users can (and would be best advised to) adjust the shooting settings themselves, the SX20 has the ability to adjust the image settings instantly based on the detected landscape as defined by 22 predefined parameters built into the camera.
A feature that is slowly becoming the norm, photographers can use the zoom feature for the lens while shooting videos. The video settings can be set as high as 720p, and can be played back on a high-definition TV or monitor via an included HDMI cable ($40 value).
Image Quality
The image quality of the Powershot SX20 IS is very good, with close-up macro shots coming in clear and detailed, low-light shots displaying correct color balance (versus the 'yellow' problem many cameras have), and high ISO shots having relatively minor grain.
Color contrast isn't quite as defined as I personally like (though naturalists will love it), and the images are a bit soft, which can be adjusted for with the sharpness settings. In a few max zoom shots, there can be a bit of blurring, but that was in strenuous situations, and most shots are clear.
Conclusion
For $400, this camera isn't as spectacular as it could be. Don't misunderstand, the SX20 digital camera is fantastic by many standards. I have, however, seen other cameras that are $50 - $100 cheaper that have comparable specs and image quality, and I can't find a reason to justify buying this camera over those ones. I recommend checking out this camera in a store and taking some test shots back home to analyze before committing to purchase.
