Product Review: Carbonite Backup Software

Kristina Jones
Every computer user knows how important it is to backup the hard drive. Unfortunately, it can be a long cumbersome job, using many floppy disks or CD-ROMs. I always have a tendency to misplace important items, including software discs. When it was time for me to backup my computer's hard drive, I wanted something fast, efficient, and would eliminate the need for me to keep track of multiple discs. I found a free-trial offer Carbonite and backed all of my files up on my hard drive. After using Carbonite for a few months, I subscribed to their program.

Carbonite is easy to use and takes very little time to backup an entire hard drive. Carbonite allows you to download their software and install it on your computer. The company provides you with login information which you will definitely need while utilizing this software. The software installation is very simple and fast. Once the software is installed, you are able to start using the configuration.

The Carbonite interface is really simple. It gives the user all the information you need to know about the status of your backup and includes a tutorial. When you open Carbonite you are able to suspend and resume your backup. When your hard drive's backup is complete, Carbonite will send you an on screen message to notify you of the status of your hard drive. I really liked this so I could know exactly when my backup was complete and if I needed to begin the backup process again.

The best use I have had using Carbonite was when I did a clean install of Microsoft Vista. Being I had been preivoiusly using Microsoft XP Professional, I knew I was going to lose all of my important documents. I could have just emailed all of my documents back to myself and downloaded it that way, but that would have taken up too much time. I knew I had used Carbonite to backup my hard drive and decided I would go with it.

Once I had Microsoft Vista loaded and running, I quickly connected to the internet and went to the Carbonite website and logged in. I was pretty excited to see how easy it was to recover my files. I had to go through the download and installation process again. Once I had the Carbonite software installed, all I had to do was click a button and select a folder to receive my previous documents.

I know I can trust Carbonite if my computer crashes. I would highly recommend computer users to give Carbonite a try. A subscription for one year costs only $49.95 and is an excellent product for your money. My overall rating of using Carbonite is 5 for quality, ease of use, and performance.

I found Carbonite's restore process incredibly painful and their support even more - like a root canal.

The original restore missed most of my files and it took several days for them to tell me that I had to reconfigure Windows Defender, Windows Firewall and Norton to accept Carbonite - no mention of that anywhere on their site.

Their support has limited hours (only until 5 eastern) which is ridiculous when you can't get to your data. Even after paying an additional $19.95 for "priority" support, I didn't get the response time I would have liked and like the others, I found their responses canned and not helpful.

While the back up process might work quite well, the proof is in the restore. Not yet ready for prime time!

Kristina, you wouldn't believe this, but my computer just crashed a couple of weeks ago. I had to get a brand new hard drive...ugh! THanks for the review...it really applies to me and what has happened to me recently! Gave ya a 5 for "quality, ease of use, and performance"!! :o)

This sounds really useful! I'm really bad about backing up my files. Thanks for the info.

Sounds like a great program. There is nothing worse than losing pictures and important files stored on the computer.
