Product Review: Crest Pro-Health Rinse

Kirsten Van Detta
Crest Pro-Health rinse claims to guard against plaque, gingivitis and bad breath for 12 hours. After brushing, just rinse for 30 seconds and you're done for 12 hours. Though this may sound like another great Crest product, it is not without its flaws. So before you slap down that $6 for oral health in a bottle, check out the reasons you might want to put it in reverse and head back to the alcohol-based mouthwashes.

Pros

Crest Pro-Health rinse with no alcohol is great for those of us who can't quite handle that hot laser feeling in our mouths first thing in the morning. There is no burning sensation while using this mouthwash, which is a definite plus. It can even be used when you have a canker sore or cut in your mouth. There is absolutely no sting.

Crest Pro-Health Mouthwash also does an excellent job of giving your mouth a clean and fresh feeling much longer than a traditional, alcohol based mouthwash such as Listerine. It's the Pert of mouthwashes; you just wash and go.

Cons

Only Crest's Pro-Health toothpaste was good enough to garner the American Dental Association's (ADA) seal of approval. The Crest Pro-Health rinse label bears no such symbol or claim. The label only states, "Provides Dentist Recommended Benefits" with a medical symbol above it to make it appear more legitimate.

Crest Pro-Health also contains cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) as it's antiseptic agent, which has been found to create brown stains between teeth. CPC also has industrial uses, such as in pesticides. While CPC may burn less, alcohol based rinses have not been found to cause brown tooth stains nor have they been used to kill insects on plants.

One issue I have with the long-lasting clean feeling is that your entire mouth gets the deluxe $65 wash and wax. This means, if my teeth are protected and clean all day long, so is my tongue. Why would that be a problem? Oh, I don't know, because I like to taste what I'm eating instead of giving my one act interpretation of how to chew on sod. Even hours after using Crest Pro-Health mouthwash there is a film of Crest cleanliness all over my mouth which prevents me from tasting just about anything I put in my mouth.

To sum it up, Crest Pro-Health mouthwash accomplishes exactly what it claims and more. Your mouth will be clean but over time you will develop stains on your teeth and have to use half a shaker of salt on everything you eat because suddenly food is incredibly bland. Although, this could be a good thing; perhaps Crest should add "Swish and spit one hour before your Cousin's wedding or company BBQ to reduce food intake".

For 32 years I had great teeth, by brushing my teeth 2x daily. 2 years ago I added Crest ProHealth to my regimine, thinking it was a GOOD thing to use this mouthwash. WRONG I was! It has now ruined my teeth!!! It took just 2 years for this mouthwash to ruin the great teeth that I had! :( AVOID THIS MOUTHWASH

I just had my teeth cleaned last week and I was wondering why my bottom teeth were already stained between them. I also have a small white filling on the top that is now permanantly dark. I use the toothpaste and rinse.

I am a licensed dental hygienist who also works for Crest. I would like to add to the conversation about Crest Pro-Health Rinse.

Crest Pro-Health Rinse kills 99% of the germs that cause plaque, gingivitis and bad breath in a unique alcohol-free formula. Unlike alcohol-containing mouthwashes, Crest Pro-Health Rinse doesn't burn, making it easier to use for the recommended 30 seconds twice daily. Alcohol - at high concentrations - has been reported to contribute to dry mouth, which can actually worsen bad breath and the growth of more germs.

Like all mouthwashes that effectively fight plaque and gingivitis, Crest Pro-Health Rinse can contribute to temporary, surface-level brown tooth discoloration, which is reported by a small percentage of individuals. Tooth discoloration could actually be one indication, in some people, that the product is working. After the rinse kills germs in your mouth, the dead germs can collect on the tooth surface and create the appearance of a brown s

"This product also contains propylene glycol, chemically closely related to poisonous ethylene glycol. This seems a risk. "

It seems a risk if you do not know what it is. It never hurst to be cautous with your health. There are alot of chemicals that we consume that are closely related to poisonous ones. Propylene glycol is used in food quite frequently as a sweetener and used in commercial foodservice refrigeration. This is called "food grade" propylene glycol. Most sweetened dog food snacks contain PG. Non-food grade propylene glycol is used as a heat transfer fluid in hydronic heating and snowmelt systems. Even this grade isn't going to kill you if ingested, maybe upset your GI system. However ethylene glycol is in fact poisonous, and an entirely different substance. EG is used as anti-freeze for our cars, and in some commercial hydronic heating systems.

I have my teeth cleaned every 3 months and after I started using Crest Pro Health I started getting brown stains on my teeth. First they thought it was coffe stains but after a couople times something was not right, I began to research the issue and behold all these people with the same problem using the same product,The Crest Co. should be held accountable for this and I will be seeking counsel. Misleading people to make your profits is wrong,Hope to see you in court soon !!
