Product Review: Cocoa Butter Moisturizing Lotion by Personal Care

Jennifer Burss
I am always on the look out for good beauty values. Through many of my "beauty adventures" I've discovered some great products that can be used by the whole family. Cocoa butter has been used for years as a natural skin moisturizer, and actually comes from the same plant used to make cocoa and chocolate. A few weeks ago I sent my husband to the store to pick up a few items.

One the things I needed that he picked up was lotion, Cocoa Butter Moisturizing Lotion by Personal Care. This lotion cost only a dollar plus sales tax. This price for a 20 ounces bottle sounded like a bargain when he brought it home. It had the usual pleasant smell of cocoa butter as well as the natural product's light yellow color.

Upon using the lotion I discovered it was very watery, and was in fact mostly water. When searching the back label for its ingredients I found mineral oil, glycerin, and various forms of alcohol among a host of other unpronounceable components. These ingredients are supposed to "tone, soften, and smooth" skin.

Cocoa butter usually clogs my pores and irritates my skin, especially less expensive brands of cocoa butter lotion. Although I really appreciated my husband picking up this item for me, I was a little concerned about what this would do to my skin.

I found that this item works well as a hand lotion and a hand lotion only. It also needs frequent reapplication. I prefer lotions and creams that do not have such requirements and can be applied once after several hours. Skin care is very important when you are a wheelchair user because; the frequent need to be in one position for long time periods can cause skin to breakdown. This begins with reddened, itchy, and sore patches on the skin. It can lead to open sores and infection so it is always best to add a protective layer whenever possible.

This lotion sinks into the skin quickly, but a lot of it is required to get the same moisturizing power as a slightly more expensive lotion. The product also clogged my pores, causing breakouts which are never pleasant. If you need a new hand lotion and are the type of person to buy two separate types then this may suffice. I would not recommend this lotion for all purposes to anyone as it is very greasy and it takes so much for every application.
