Blair Mathis
As with all other increases in technology, diabetics can take advantage of using software to monitor their blood sugar levels thanks to Contour's USB glucose meter. This blood sugar meter is equipped with a USB plug that is compatible with both Windows and OS X operating systems, and uses the GlucoFacts software provided by Bayer. With a suggested retail price of $80, it is a good deal considering the quality of the meter and the included software.

Features

The Contour USB Glucose meter is shaped like a USB flash drive and has a glossy LCD screen on one side. One end has a cap that covers a USB plug, while the other side has a port to put the test strip into. The face of the device has three buttons to navigate the menu and features of the device. The power button is on one side. A wall charger is included for the device; the device can also be charged by plugging it into the USB port on your computer.

The LCD feature shows the blood sugar level of the test strip, the current time and date, the ability to add and view notes, whether the blood level is pre or post meal, and reminders. The stick stores the logs of your blood levels one the included Java software application called Glucofacts Deluxe. This software will show a line graph of your various blood levels, as well as organizing everything by date; the various info is color coded to make at-glance info easy.
Reports can be printed out for archival or sharing with a doctor. Another useful feature is the ability to show trends, which will let you know if your blood sugar has been regularly high or low.

Conclusion

Contour's Glucose USB Meter is a wonderful modern way for diabetics to test, analyze, store, and graph their blood sugar information. The ability to electronically archive your information, print graphs, and sort data by date or levels makes providing medical data simple and fast. The software is easy to use, as is the device, so older and computer illiterate individuals will be able to use the device easily.
