Product Review: DaVinci Emily Convertible Crib

A Consumer Reports Best Buy - and for Good Reason!

Suzanne Rose
Picking out a crib can be a hard decision, especially with all the warnings and reviews about dangers found in certain cribs. That's why I choose the DaVinci Emily Convertible Crib for my baby based on Consumer Reports. In the Consumer Reports baby book, they had this exact crib checked as a best buy for both safety and quality. At the time I wasn't sure if I was having a boy or a girl, but I thought this crib would easily suit either of them. Now I think it's perfect for my little girl's room, but I could easily see it in a little boy's room as well. It all depends on how you decorate!

The DaVinci Emily Convertible Crib is made of a non-toxic wood which is beautiful to look at. Even though my baby has teeth now and is sometimes caught biting the rails, I have yet to see any noticeable dents or scratches. If that is a concern in the future, I can always buy crib wraps to prevent her from biting. I do not consider myself to be incredibly careful with the crib, so it's had plenty of opportunity to get scratched but hasn't yet.

I originally wanted a Black or Ebony crib, but later decided to get Espresso. The DaVinci Emily Convertible Crib comes in both colors, and both look stunning, but the Espresso gives it a warm quality that I like. Plus it matches great with the Espresso trim on her windows and the Sage Green walls. This combination made it easy to turn her room into a forest with a big tree decal on one wall and a sunshine overhead. It also comes in White, Natural and a few other choices depending on what you are looking for. Of all the choices, I still think Espresso is the best looking.

My dad and husband put this together in no time while I read through the directions. I would have loved to be part of the building, but I wasn't supposed to be straining myself. There were times the directions got confusing since it was mostly just pictures, but once we figured out what we were looking at it came together quickly. It uses lots of machine bolts and you'll need a few good screwdrivers but that is about it. Once together, it is strong and stable and not going anywhere.

The mattress of the DaVinci Emily Convertible Crib can be placed at 4 different levels and we've already moved it down to the 4th since she learned to stand. As an infant, it was nice having her at a higher level to make it easier to get her in and out. Now that she can sit and stand, having her at the lower level is safer and she can stand up to help us get her out a little easier. Once she is a toddler, this can be converted into a toddler bed with parts that were included with purchase. When she gets even older, all I would need to buy is a full sized railing kit to make it into a full bed.

We did have to make sure to buy an adjustable mobile for this crib as I read reviews that some of the fixed mobiles wouldn't fit the wide rails. We found a really cute adjustable mobile that also acts as a projector so it can be used for a long time. It fits great on the crib side and rail width isn't a problem at all.

I recommend the DaVinci Emily Convertible Crib to all my friends, and at least one has already bought it for her baby. It is cute, functional and most importantly - it is safe! It was difficult to buy having only seen it online, but in the end I decided if Consumer Reports said it was good, it must be good. If you can't take my word for it, at least take theirs! Enjoy!!

Thanks. The link in my resources shows where I got it, but it's sold all over the net so I would shop for best price. I didn't pay for it so I don't know how much it was, price changes based on sales so just shop around.

I loved this article. It sounds like it could end up being a real family heirloom. Maybe other people who would like to buy this would have been interested in where you got it and how much it was. I bet your baby's nursery is just beautiful!
