Product Review: Dove Smooth Milk Chocolate

Laura Brady
I was at the checkout line in the grocery store and realized that I had forgotten an essential item. Chocolate! It was too late to back away as I had already loaded most of my groceries onto the checkout. So I frantically searched the "impulse" items for something other than a Kitkat or your typical boring candy bar. You see, I'm a bit of a chocolate snob, although I can certainly make do in a pinch. Finally I saw a small box of individually wrapped Dove smooth milk chocolates, so I threw them in with my groceries.

The box of Dove milk chocolates is shaped like a small gift box and is a dark chocolate brown color. The chocolates are individually wrapped in blue foil and sealed in an airtight bag. Each piece of foil has a "Promises" message written on the inside. They say things such as "Discover yourself" and "Smile. People will wonder what you've been up to." I'm not sure what the sayings have to do with promises though.

There are 5 pieces in a serving (40 grams) and approximately 2/5 servings per box. Each serving contains 220 calories, 13 grams of fat, 8 grams of sat fat, 0 grams of trans fat, 10 mg of cholesterol (3% of the DV), 25 mg of Sodium (1% of the DV), 24 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, 22 grams of sugar, 2 grams of protein, 2% DV of Vitamin A, 6% DV of Calcium, and 2% DV of Iron.

I try and limit my intake of chocolate to a couple of ounces a day to keep the doctor away, so I usually prefer a more intense type of chocolate such as dark or bittersweet chocolate. However I do enjoy milk chocolate if it's a good quality and has a smooth, silky texture. Dove milk chocolate does have a good milk chocolate flavor but there is a slight hint of chalkiness to the texture. The chocolate is also slightly chewy and doesn't melt in my mouth like a really good quality chocolate would, even when I just hold it on my tongue.

All in all Dove's smooth milk chocolate squares are fine for a chocolate attack but I don't think I would purchase them again unless it was another "chocolate" emergency. So my search for the ultimate chocolates available goes on. It's a tough job but somebody has to do it.
