Product Review: E.L.F. Brightening Eyeliner

Alexis Valentine
I recently fell in love with E.L.F cosmetics, short for Eyes Lips Face, and went a little crazy with my shopping. I think I almost have every single product that they offer, almost. I first heard about E.L.F cosmetics through word-of-mouth via Youtube videos while I was looking for makeup tutorials. E.L.F is most famous for their very affordable makeup products. They have everything from lip glosses to body care products. In my last batch of E.L.F makeup that I ordered I got their Brightening eyeliner pencils in three colors, Ash, Midnight and Glided. I hadn't heard much about their eyeliners so I wanted to try this product out for myself.

About

E.L.F's eyeliner pencils are a gel-powder formula that is infused with some sort of skin soothing ingredients. What the product claims to do is to instantly brighten the eyes. It's suppose to be easy to use, gliding smoothly onto the delicate eye area without any tugging.

My Experience
Pros

What I like about E.L.F's Brightening eyeliner pencil is that like the rest of E.L.F's products this eyeliner is cruelty-free, which means it wasn't tested on animals. I'm a big supporter of cruelty-free cosmetics. It just doesn't make sense to me that animals have to suffer for human vanity. E.L.F's Brightening eyeliner pencil is super affordable, again, just like the rest of E.L.F's products. I got the eyeliners in three colors and each one costs me only one dollar. Each eyeliner pencil also comes with a sharpener, which is great for those that don't already have an eyeliner sharpener or one that's the right size for these eyeliner pencils. I like that E.L.F's Brightening eyeliner pencils don't irritate my eyes the way a lot of other brands do. It goes on smoothly when applied on my eyelids. The color pay off is great and it stays put for a decent amount of time too. I would say about three to four hours if you're not the type to rub your eyes. I find that it doesn't smudge either, always a good thing.

Cons

There were quite a few things about E.L.F's Brightening eyeliner that I didn't like and thought could seriously use some improvements on. The first thing is that it's a bit shorter than most eyeliner pencils, even for only a dollar. It's also a hard product to find like many of E.L.F's products so I had to order it off of their website which wouldn't bother me so much except that their shipping is nearly $7. I didn't think there were enough color choices too choose from either. Aside from the three I got there were maybe three to four other colors to choose from. I noticed that on one pencil the tip was slightly frayed and there were pieces of wood sticking out which is dangerous. The product claims to be tugging-free but it really was. I had to tug a little but avoided it as much as I could be trying other methods to get the color on. The one thing that bothered me the most about E.L.F's Brightening eyeliner pencil is that it doesn't work too well when used on the tight and water line. I had to really rub it several times to get the color going.

Verdict

Although it's very affordable I wouldn't recommend this eyeliner nor do I plan on ordering any more. E.L.F's Brightening eyeliner pencil is just too much work and is potentially dangerous. I just don't trust this product near my eyes.
