Product Review: Flatout Flatbreads

Laura Brady
I love Flatout Flatbread wraps. They're a great source of whole grains, low in calories, high in fiber and protein and are full of complex carbohydrates. They also taste great, have a soft texture and feel, and keep well in the refrigerator or freezer. I keep some on hand all the time for quick snacks, lunches, pizzas and appetizers. They have a lot of different flavors and varieties and they're made by Flatout in Saline Michigan.

The type of Flatout that I use most often is the Light Italian Herb flatbread, which is also lower in carbohydrates. The Light Italian Herb Flatbread has only 90 calories, 2.5 grams of fat, 410 mg of sodium (17% of the RDA), 16 grams of carbohydrates, 9 grams of fiber, 0 grams of sugar and 9 grams of protein. The Light varieties also come in original and sun-dried tomato.

The other varieties of Flatouts have a few more calories but are still very healthy options. For example, the original flatbreads have the same flavors of the Light, but they also come in spinach and southwest chipotle. The original has 140 calories, 2 grams of fat, 26 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of dietary fiber, 2 grams of sugar, and 7 grams of protein. The Flatout Healthy Grain varieties come in whole-wheat white, multi grain, and harvest wheat. Their nutritional profile is closer to the Light varieties.

Flatout now also has Flatout Minis and Flatout Kidz. The minis have only 70 calories and come in 100% Stone ground wheat preservative free, Mediterranean herb, harvest wheat, southwest chipotle and French toast. The Kids flatbreads are also smaller, have 60 calories and come in original flavor and cinnamon burst.

Flatouts are great to have on hand for pizzas, appetizers, wraps and more. They hold up well in school lunches and because there are so many flavors your children are bound to like at least one of them. It's a great way to get kids eating whole grain and to have fun in the kitchen while they make up their own wraps and pizza creations. The French toast and cinnamon varieties make great portable breakfasts. Just spread some lowfat cream cheese or peanut butter on them and add some sliced fruit for a healthy treat anyone would love. Flatouts are a handy, healthy option for anyone wanting a quick and easy way to incorporate whole grains into their diet.
