Product Review: GE Plasma TV / LCD Screen Cleaning System

A Safe Cleaner for Laptop and Plasma TV Screens

Nina Rotz
We have a busy household. Our son loves to touch the expensive plasma TV and leave fingerprints all over it. Dust particles and occasional coffee stains find their way to my work laptop. The TV is not immune to dust either. We like to take care of electronics that we own, especially since replacing or repairing such items is costly. Our household prefers to use the GE Plasma TV / LCD Screen Cleaning System, which helps us combat dust and stains on our electronics.

GE Plasma TV / LCD Screen Cleaning System: Availability
My husband found this GE cleaning kit at Target, for less than $20. I needed something other than rubbing alcohol to remove a sticky stain from my laptop's keys. It just so happened that we needed a new cleaning solution for our TV. The product is also sold on the web, but you might run into it as GE Plasma TV / LCD Screen Cleaning System or GE Deluxe Plasma Cleaning Kit - 72557. This is actually the same exact product even though the names may seem different. The kit contains a soft bristle brush, anti-static cloth and alcohol-based cleaning solution.

How to Clean Stains and Dust on a Plasma TV
We never found much use for the soft-bristle brush while cleaning our plasma TV. The brush does work well if we wish to remove dust around the TV buttons, but the cloth works much better. We wipe the TV screen off with one side of the anti-static cloth. We save the clean side for the alcohol-based solution. It takes a few sprays for a large plasma TV to be cleaned thoroughly, although we always spray the cloth and never the screen directly.

How to Clean Laptop LCD Screens
I use the soft bristle brush to remove dust and debris from both laptop screen and keys. The soft bristles bend easily and glide between the keys. I follow up dust removal by wiping off my laptop screen with the anti-static cloth included in the kit. I spray a small amount of the cleaning solution on the cloth and wipe the laptop screen off. The total job takes less than five minutes and my laptop is as clean as it was the day I bought it. I have wiped down my laptop's keys using the solution and cloth. It works well, as it is alcohol-based and evaporates quickly.

Tips and Recommendations
Always turn your electronics off when cleaning, especially if you are applying any cleaners to the screen. Do not apply a window cleaner or other household cleaning product, even if you are using GE Deluxe Plasma Cleaning Kit. The anti-static cloth in this cleaning kit can be used for weekly dusting and maintenance. You do not have to use the kit on a weekly basis, save the cleaning sprays for stains and to clean up spills. Wash the cloth separately, preferably by hand and just using warm water. Leave it out to air-dry and never place it in the dryer with fabric sheets.

Precautions are necessary when cleaning a plasma TV or a LCD laptop screen. Some warranties are considered invalid if you are knowingly using improper methods to clean your electronics.

GE Plasma TV / LCD Screen Cleaning System is inexpensive and an easy way to clean both our TV and laptop screen. The product is alcohol-based and safe for electronics. I have attempted to clean the laptop screen using home remedies and rubbing alcohol, but the cleaning kit by far did a better job. I particularly like that there is no residue or screen streaks when using this product.

Spending thousands of dollars on a quality plasma TV and laptop is a necessary occurrence for many families. A consumer takes into consideration brands, features, components, audio, video and quality before bringing home a laptop or TV. People want a good product even if it costs a lot, but the most expensive part of this type of electronics is the damage caused by improper care. Both plasma and LCD screens are delicate, requiring special care to avoid damaging the screen surface. GE Plasma TV / LCD Screen Cleaning System is a cleaning kit that is safe to use on both a plasma TV and LCD laptop screens.

I checked the components and one is CAS 55965-84-9, that appears to be carcinogenic!! Not so safe!!

Nice review. The cleaner I use leaves a little feathery looking hair-like residue. :(
