Product Review: Glide Dental Floss

Barb Hacker
Glide Floss, a product made by Crest, is the Cadillac of dental flosses. It was specially made to help reluctant flossers, who are often dealing with such problems as tightly spaced teeth, become regular flossers.

By now, most have heard that flossing is a crucial part of a dental hygiene routine. Flossing removes the bacteria that builds up in between the teeth and below the gum line. This bacteria takes twenty-four hours to regenerate, so once daily flossing is strongly recommended. When the bacteria is not properly removed, gingivitis, or gum disease, is the result. When advanced, gingivitis turns into periodontal disease where the gums recede and tooth loss becomes probable. Some heart disease has even been linked to bacteria which originates in the gums. Not flossing can lead to a multitude of problems, only some of which are in your mouth.

Yet, many people have legitimate reasons for not flossing. Tightly spaced teeth often make flossing frustrating. Conventional floss does not fit in between the teeth and, if the person is able to get it in there, it often gets shredded and stuck on the way out. This is uncomfortable and annoying.

The makers of Glide Floss have solved this problem. The dental floss is thicker than conventional floss, yet it is more durable. Glide Floss is made with a patented, shred resistant fiber. And, it has a light coating of natural wax, so it slides between teeth easily. Glide Floss is also designed to irritate the gums less than conventional floss.

I was first introduced to Glide Floss years ago by my dentist. He sent a sample home with me when I complained how often conventional floss shredded between my molars. After my first use, I was immediately sold on the benefits of Glide Floss. Glide Floss remains the number one recommended dental floss by dental professionals.

I have tried imitation, store brand flosses which claim to have the same properties of Glide Floss, but none have lived up to the actual product. I am not one for name brand shopping and will usually buy the cheaper, store brand if available. But, I make an exception for Glide Floss.

Glide Floss is available at department, grocery and drug stores throughout the United States. You can choose from unflavored floss or mint. Glide Floss also comes in single use and 50 meter sizes. It costs around $3.00, depending on where you buy it, and is worth every penny.

I am a long time user of Glide Floss and believe it to be the best I've used. However, in the last couple of years since Glide was acquired by by "Crest", I think the quality and quality control (consistency) has suffered significantly. I have much more of a shredding problem with it now than I used to.

I have that shredding problem too. I've found Glide and Oral B flosses work a lot better. Excellent review!
