Product Review: Hannah Montana Secret Star Hair Color Kit

Hannah Montana was all the rage for my daughter's fourth birthday this year. Among the myriad of Hannah Montana gifts, she received the Hannah Montana Secret Star Hair Color Kit. Although I was skeptical and leery at first, the Hannah Montana Secret Star Hair Color Kit, if used correctly, is a fun project for that Hannah Montana wannabe in your family.

Hannah Montana Secret Star Hair Color Kit Assembly

The Hannah Montana Secret Star Hair Color Kit consists of a hair coloring tool and hair color cartridges in pink, blue, coral, gold, purple, and neon green. The tool itself comes assembled, so the only assembly is learning how to insert the hair color cartridges. The diagrams weren't very easy to understand on the instructions that came with the Hannah Montana Secret Star Hair Color Kit, so I had to call a friend who has one for her daughter. Open the brush head cover and pull out the removable brush head. After removing the lid to the hair color cartridges, the cartridges slide into a curved slot near the hinge of the brush head cover.

Other than the initial confusion about how to install the hair color cartridges, I found the assembly of the Hannah Montana Secret Star Hair Color Kit to be really easy. It is very simple to change out the different hair color cartridges.

The application of color with the Hannah Montana Secret Star Hair Color Kit is much like using a hair straightener. There is a button on the wand that, when pushed up, opens the hair holder. Because the removable brush head isn't very wide, you don't need a large chunk of hair. Gather a thin chunk maybe an inch wide of hair, position it inside the hair holder near the scalp, and turn on the brush to activate the color transfer. Work the wand from root to tip; the slower you go, the bolder the color will appear.

Make sure to comb out any tangles in your child's hair before applying color using the Hannah Montana Secret Star Hair Color Kit. Also, if you're planning on using more than one color on your child's hair, I recommend starting with the lighter colors. The color will remain on the brush, and it will taint the additional color cartridges and the color in your child's hair.

Be careful to hold the wand with the hair holder down toward the child's head. Although it hasn't happened with me and my daughter, warnings on the package include problems with hair getting caught in the brushes. For younger children, I recommend applying the color for them. Older children could use the Hannah Montana Secret Star Hair Color Kit on their own under adult supervision.

Cleanup is simple with the Hannah Montana Secret Star Hair Color Kit. Remove the hair color cartridge. Snap the lid back onto the color cartridges and store in the tray provided. To wash the removable brush head, simply rinse with warm water. Use a damp cloth to wipe the inside of the hair color wand and allow everything to dry before using again.

To remove the hair color from your child's hair, simply wash with shampoo. If the hair color rubs off on clothing or bedding, toss the item in the washing machine. The hair color in the Hannah Montana Secret Star Hair Color Kit is completely temporary, and I haven't found it to stain.
