Product Review: New Herbal Essences Dangerously Straight Pin Straight Shampoo and Conditioner

Can it Make My Natural Afro Hair Straight?

ShawnTe Pierce
When I received the chance to preview the new formula for Herbal Essences Dangerously Straight Pin Straight shampoo and conditioner (say that three times fast) I was excited. I love the smell of most of the Herbal Essences shampoos and conditioners yet Herbal Essences had yet to develop a product that addressed the type of hair I have - thick, frizzy, afro hair. Will this new formula be the one to help me go from 'fro to straight without using too many styling products? There was only one way to find out.

Herbal Essences Test, Day One: Straight Styling Using Dangerously Straight Pin Straight Shampoo and Conditioner Only

The first thing I noticed was the exotic scent of the honeyed pear when I opened the shampoo. I figured if the New Herbal Essences Dangerously Straight Pin Straight shampoo and conditioner do not help me style my hair straight, at least they smell divine. When I poured the shampoo into the palm of my hand, I noticed it was a thick formula, which I love. My natural afro hair does not even attempt to lather up with thin shampoos. While I worked the shampoo into my hair and massaged my scalp, I felt the tight coils of my hair loosen a little. I rinsed and repeated.

The Dangerously Straight Pin Straight conditioner has about the same consistency of Herbal Essences Hello Hydration conditioner and feels just as great smoothing into my hair. My hair requires more conditioning than most people, so I wrapped my hair in a warm towel and let the conditioner set for about three minutes. I rinsed the conditioner out thoroughly and towel blotted my hair. My coils were still rather loose making my afro look a bit larger than normal.

I sectioned off my hair for easy styling and ran the blow dryer over my hair quickly to finish drying it. I knew that I could not blow dry it straight so I went for my trusty Gold-N-Hot hot comb to straighten my hair. My hair straightened nicely from the root to half way down each section. After I finished with the hot comb, I released my sections and combed my hair down. The bottom half of my hair was very frizzy and puffed out. I looked like a member of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.

Herbal Essences Test, Day Two: Straight Styling Using Avon's Lotus Shield

I shampooed and conditioned my hair as I did the previous day with the "Dangerously Straight Pin Straight." After I towel blotted my hair I applied a dime-sized amount of Avon's Lotus Shield to my hair. I then sectioned off my hair. I did not need to blow dry because the Lotus Shield helps my hair air dry fast. Before I straightened each section I applied more Lotus shield to each section of hair and I applied a little of the Herbal Essences Dangerously Straight Pin Straight conditioner to my ends to keep them from drying out.

The results were better than I'd hope. Each section straightened quickly and my hair did not frizz. My ends were also soft and supple. After I finished straightening my hair, I released each section and combed my hair down. My hair was straighter than it usually gets when I hot comb it. It also was shiny and still smelled like the Dangerously Straight Pin Straight conditioner.

Conclusions and Tips for Herbal Essences Dangerously Straight Pin Straight Shampoo and Conditioner

For tightly coiled afro hair like my own, using the Herbal Essences Dangerously Straight Pin Straight shampoo and conditioner alone may not help you to achieve a straight style. You will need to use a styling product that fights frizz to get your hair completely straight. The conditioner serves as a good leave-in conditioner for the ends, keeping them soft and smooth. I've found that smoothing a dime size amount onto your hair before you wrap it or before you roll your hair in rollers will give you added shine in the morning.

Overall, I felt Herbal Essences Dangerously Straight Pin Straight shampoo and conditioner works well when used with my regular straight styling products. The conditioner can serve double duty as a leave-in conditioner to maintain smoothness. However, what would make this collection perfect is if they added a thermal heat styling cream or spray that also fought frizz. Look for this new formula of Herbal Essences Dangerously Straight Pin Straight shampoo and conditioner to hit stores soon!
