Product Review: Herbal Essences Degunkify Shampoo

Angelie MacKenzie
I've been looking for a new shampoo for a while since my hair seems to have gotten used to the Paul Mitchell shampoo that I was using. Besides that, my hair has changed from being dry to being a bit oily. So, I decided to go back to using Herbal Essences shampoo since that is what I used to use before Paul Mitchell.

What I really wanted was a shampoo for oily hair. Unable to find any shampoo for oily hair, I decided to try a type of clarifying shampoo. After some looking around online, I bought the Herbal Essences Degunkify shampoo. The bottle says that it is a "tingling deep cleaning shampoo." I believe the only scent it comes in is Icy Pineapple. Herbal Essences Degunkify shampoo claims to clean the gunk out of your hair caused by hair styling products such as hairspray, mousse, hair gel, etc.

After using this shampoo, I was somewhat disappointed. Having used Herbal Essences shampoos before, I expected more from this product. While this shampoo isn't for oily hair, it did help a little with that problem. However, my hair looked terrible. It was somewhat dry and frizzy. As for the Icy Pineapple scent, it smells like rotten peaches.

To get a second opinion on the shampoo, my mom also used the Herbal Essences Degunkify shampoo. Unlike me, she doesn't have any issues with her hair or scalp. And she wasn't thrilled with the product either. After using it, her hair was dry and limp. She complained to me about it, but hey, it wasn't my fault.

I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone considering neither of us liked it. I don't understand what happened with Herbal Essences' line of shampoos and other hair care products. I used Herbal Essences shampoo a few years back. This was before they changed the design of the bottle and came out with shampoos for different purposes. The new bottle design is very pretty, but I'd rather have a good product than a pretty bottle if I had to choose.

Their shampoo used to be so good that it was recommended to me by someone else back when I used to use it. But today, Herbal Essences is a brand that you don't hear of anymore. Perhaps it is because their new line is nothing to talk about. I wish that they would bring back the good shampoos they used to have. Their old line of shampoos left my hair feeling clean, as shown in the commercials.

I don't like the new line of Herbal Essences shampoo either. I really hate how they discontinued their old one. I tried using their new volumizing shampoo and it left my hair feeling dry and straw-like, even when I used the conditioner. :| So much for their color me "happy" line.

Herbal Essences works better for me now than it did when it was original. It left my hair like an oil slick, whereas now, it actually does the job.

I actually loved this shampoo. The tingling feeling is a little strange at first, but it really got my hair clean and smelling good. Since I also straighten my hair every other day, it helped retain a lot of moisture. My personal review of the product is 3.5/5 stars.

I was soooo upset when they discontinued their Herbal Essence line. I wrote the company when I couldn't find the shampoo I was using and was told they discontinued the whole line. The scent of their new like stinks, literally. I tried one shampoo, hated it, and returned it to the store for refund. I too wish they would come back with the old formula. It's not like they couldn't. Or.....if they don't want to admit this new line is a total flop - could sell both lines!

Great review! I have never used Herbal Essences but my cousin, who used to love the line, switched to a different one after they discontinued the shampoo she used. Same as you she did not like their new formulas.
