Product Review: Hershey Unveils Three Halloween/Fall Flavored Kisses

Jennifer Eblin
When summer turns to fall, some people are drawn up in the changing of the leaves. For me, I get excited because it means the stores will start stocking the new Halloween offerings. This year I was excited to see three flavors of Hershey Kisses with a Halloween or fall slant and only one was released last year.

The Candy Corn Hershey Kisses were released last year as part of the company's efforts to celebrate their 100th anniversary. Though the Candy Corn Kisses were out last year, they weren't very popular in my area so I wasn't able to find them. This year I grabbed a bag from my local Target, excited because I love Candy Corn.

Each Kiss looks exactly like a piece of Candy Corn, with a distinct orange, red and white area. These are made of white chocolate, which is another favorite of mine so I was excited to pop one in my mouth. These taste exactly like a piece of Candy Corn! I let one sit in my mouth for a few minutes until it started to melt and I was in heaven. The only bad side is that I can't eat very many in one sitting because the sugary taste starts to burn my tongue.

Target also had the Pumpkin Spice Hershey Kisses on display and I snatched up a bag of those as well. I wasn't sure what to expect because while I love pumpkin pie, I'm usually not a fan of "spice" flavoring. The Pumpkin Spice Hershey Kisses were a pale brown color, similar to homemade pumpkin pie filling before it's baked.

The outside of the Hershey Kiss smelled strongly of cinnamon and I made the mistake of biting right into it. Right away the taste of cinnamon filled my mouth, completely overpowering any other flavors. The inside of each Kiss is filled with some kind of cream that's flavored with the spices. The second time I let the piece sit on my tongue and it was much better. The outside shell slowly melted into the spices, which mellowed the flavor. I still wasn't a big fan of these though, too much cinnamon for my liking.

Lastly I was able to get my hands on the Caramel Apple Hershey Kisses. These are a pretty hard candy to locate in my area, but I was lucky enough to make a trade to get my hands on some. The outside of the Kiss looks like your typical chocolate Kiss, but the inside has a soft caramel flavored with apple.

At first the Caramel Apple Hershey Kiss has a nice flavor, akin to a Caramello with a soft caramel inside a sweet chocolate shell. Then the apple flavoring kicked in and they lost me. The apple tastes very artificial and sweet, which put me off. I asked a friend to try one because he loves apple flavored things and he had the same reaction.

For me the best Halloween/fall Hershey Kiss is the Candy Corn, followed by the Pumpkin Spice, which I can't wait to use in my fall cheesecake. The Caramel Apple though is something I'm glad I tried, but I won't be having it again.
