Product Review: HP Pavilion Dv9815nr Notebook PC

LIVIN
I recently purchased the 17-inch Hewlett Packard Pavilion dv9815nr Notebook PC laptop. The computer has the following specifications:

· Processor - AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual Core Mobile Technology TL-60

· Processor Speed - 2.00 GHz

· System Memory (RAM) - 3.00 GB DDR; expandable to 4.00 GB

· Hard Drive Size / Type - 250 GB / SATA (2500 RPM)

· Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce Go 7150M (UMA)

· Video Memory - Up to 1071 MB

· USB 2.0 Ports - 4

· IEEE 1394 FireWire Ports - 1

· Wireless Networking - Built-in high-speed (802.11b/g) wireless LAN

· Size Specifications - 7.7 lbs and 1.7" thin

The Hewlett Packard laptop also includes:

· Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1

· Energy Star Qualifications

· Built in speakers and web cam

· Trial Norton Internet Security

· Trial Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote

Pros

I desired a speedy computer that allows me to multi-task without losing out on performance. I also felt the 250 GB hard drive was necessary for my purposes. Initially, I did not plan on purchasing a 17-inch laptop, as I felt 15.4 inches would be sufficient. While the 17-inch screen is not necessary for internet and/or word processing usage, the width allows for a full keyboard. It provides the space to function as well as any desktop. The 17 inch screen also adds to the enjoyment of watching movies or playing games (although the graphics card is not up to game specifications.) In these regards, the Hewlett Packard computer has met or exceeded my standards.

Cons

When I first used the built-in double-layer DVD+RW/CD-RW drive, I suspected it might have a design flaw. The drive - on the side of the laptop - requires downward pressure when inserting a CD or DVD. Instantly, I suspected the drive might not be durable. Within three months, the DVD+RW/CD-RW drive stopped working.

The HP Pavilion dv9815nr Notebook PC comes with trial versions of Norton Internet Security and Microsoft Office. Unfortunately, these are merely trial versions. So, if you want a security suite, you'll still have to shell over more money down the road. Also, if you want Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint or any other Microsoft Office program, you will need to spend additional money. However unfortunate, trial versions and nothing more seem to be standard operating procedure these days - it's how companies keep the appearance of low prices.

The right shift key is small, oddly located and requires adjustment.

Changes

The HP Pavilion dv9815nr Notebook PC marks my first experience with Windows Vista. As such, it takes some adjustment. However, I do not see this as a negative. I have noticed enhanced features with Windows Vista that I enjoy. Granted, when I first got acclimated I could not find some simple items, but that is a byproduct of change.

Other Issues or Non-Issues

Some people complain about fingerprints. I say, don't touch the computer screen. The screen is intended for viewing, not touching. The keyboard is for touching.

This laptop may not run ideally after being in sleep or hibernate mode. It might freeze or falter. However, I've circumvented the problem by not using sleep or hibernate mode. Instead, the laptop is either on or off.

Overall

The HP Pavilion dv9815nr Notebook PC has the capabilities to run many applications at once without losing performance. It has a large enough hard drive for storing music, videos and games. It has more USB slots and ports than I'll ever know what to do with. Generally, it functions well and it doesn't feel cramped.

I am more than annoyed with the faulty built-in double-layer DVD+RW/CD-RW drive. It only lasted three months and needs to be sent in to be fixed. The trial versions of Norton Internet Security and Microsoft Office are also a tease.

Great review - I have a computer by almost everyone in my home - Laptop (gateway, Dell, HP) desk top (Imac, gateway, HP) of all of these computers I prefer my Dell laptop for travel and my Imac for home. Not sure why but I do maybe because i use them the most.

Good write up. I'm glad you are acclimating to Vista - personally, I would have listed that in the CONs section. You might try Open Office when your trial licenses expire for the MS suite. People I know have made the switch and are happy with it, partly because it's free, and partly because it does pretty much everything they want from an office suite.

Sounds like I have had better all-around luck with a smaller screened (15.4") HP dv6500t. Tight, heavily used and no mechanical quirks or problems whatever. I suspect that computers, like guitars (which I am a tad more knowledgeable about) vary from one to the other. The same model number does not necessarily guarantee an equal product. Trying multiple models of a guitar before choosing one is essential. When it comes to computers, it is a lot more complicated as flaws cannot be 'heard' in one sitting. Caveat Emptor.... always.

Informative! Intelligent! Helpful! Well written! Thank you! I won't be buying an HP anytime soon thanks hehe. But only because I'm in love with my gateway m275 tablet pc. I like writing by hand and typing. With my notebook I can do both. I will look into HP products for the family though.

Livin, I have an HP Pav. DV9317 entertainment series. Except for the problem with the DVD drive (mine is working perfectly still), I can totally agree with just about everything you said here. If I actually PUT the computer into sleep or hibernate, sometimes I can't get it to wake up. It does okay though if I just close the lid and then reopen it, but it's sluggish and weird when I try to wake it from sleep mode I put it in manually. I love the fact the keyboard is a full sized typing keyboard and not the miniaturized laptop keyboards most come with and thus it accommodates a much larger screen as well and has a full number pad on the side as part of the laptop, instead of having an integrated number pad on the letters part of the keyboard. However, that said, the shift key on the right side is tiny and did cause me to hit the up arrow a lot instead of the shift until I got used to it. Excellent review. I just replaced the keyboard last week after about a year of owning it. Super easy!

A good, and honest, write-up! I have similar experiences with Vista - as does most the free world. Which is why I recently got a laptop loaded with XP. Great article!

Very good review. I've never had an HP computer. For some reason I always thought they weren't as good as other brands. I HATE Windows Vista. My son has it on his computer and it's weird.
