Product Review: HTML Validator

Small Guide on Using the Product Itself

Bruce Bostwick
This is a web program designed to create pages offline. You can create pages for HTML, CSS, PHP, ASP, etc. depending on the usage. As far as user friendly, there is no doubt that it is just that. It can however serve as a tool that could help teach how to create pages using HTML code. This is mainly used as a coder more so than a designer. If you want programs that do web design, it would be something like Dreamweaver for example. As always, there are drawbacks to the program as well.

Cons

You can't preview the design with the program. If you want to see it, you have to use your default Internet Browser to preview it before putting it live online. While it is not a big deal, it can be for those who would like to view their progress right away. That's about one of the only minor issues that I've noticed with it and other than that, there's really nothing wrong with it.

Pros

One thing that I think is a major plus is that the end tag is created automatically. The program knows the HTML tags like the back of its hand. For example, the

tag will also have the so that you don't have to put that in yourself. Simplicity is the way to go with this system. The documents can validate but will tell if there are any errors whatsoever with it.

How to Use It

Besides opening it, you are then given a blank screen and just type away. In this, you must use HTML code if you are to use it for a web page written in that language. It is recommended that you have a good knowledge of basic HTML before attempting to use this and be confused. It can also be used to write pages in XML, an advanced language mainly data driven and can be written in the English Language. If you wish to make the document XHTML, go to Tags, then Declarations then choose which XHTML style you want to use. The difference between HTML and XHTML is very small but here it is, the
tag has to have an end like this
, the same goes for the tag. Once you see that it is basically the same at this point in time, though that could change in the future if XHTML goes to 2.0 soon.

I also recommend before attempting to use other languages other than HTML to really study up whether it be through tutorials online or getting books on the respective subjects in question. For CSS however, I believe it needs to be in either standard or pro edition. You could check online for the CSS to be valid. All that is recommended is use tutorials since there generally aren't any books that go into specifics on CSS. Most of the time, it could be included in books about HTML, XML, or XHTML for example.

OverallIt's a good program and a good tool to use to begin learning how to code. If you just need the lite version, then go on ahead. The Standard and Pro Editions of HTML Validator should be bought if it is a necessity and need much more in the way of features and want to experience it in full.

What a great review! I have been trying to find good html software...I do agree not being able to see it within the program can be a pain! Might be worth checking out though!
