I had complications post birth that led me to be re hospitalized for almost a week and separated from my exclusively breastfed baby. I was much too ill to even pump breast milk. so my son was given formula until I was released from the hospital. At that point my milk supply had decreased drastically and was on the brink of drying up. I tried all the conventional ways to increase supply to no avail.
I used bottles and regular formula to supplement for many weeks As well as continuing to try to breastfeed and boost my supply. This was very exhausting and depressing with little help and recovering from illness and surgery on my own with a new baby to care for as well! I was really at my breaking point, then I found out about the Lact-aid! It is a supplement system you use to give your baby formula while breastfeeding! It is administered from a bag filled with formula that the mom wears around her neck and the milk is sucked by the baby through a tiny tube that you slip into the baby's mouth while he or she is breastfeeding. The continuous suckling helps increase milk supply while feeding baby the formula supplement. This saves so much time for mom's trying t get their supply back up, especially if they are pumping too.
The Lact-aid is really easy to use though it is a bit tedious to clean. I found soaking the tubes immediately helped a lot as if they are allowed to dry before being thoroughly cleaned they are almost impossible to get the clogs out. The basic set costs around $50. It can be covered under some insurance policies so be sure to check with your insurance company and doctor!
The Lact-aid supplement system is not only good for those having milk supply issues but can also be used by adoptive mother's wishing to induce lactation.
The Lact-Aid supplement system is a tiny bag with a neck strap. The mom wears this around her neck and this is where the formula goes. There is a small tube leading from the bag that is carefully slipped into the baby's mouth once they are latched onto the breast. It is a little tricky setting up the first few times but after that it becomes a lot easier. You can prepare the bags ahead and store them in the refrigerator as well.
Lact-aid also offers personal support via phone or email with the purchase of the system. They have been making the product for over 30 years and provided hundreds of mother's with support during breastfeeding difficulties. Another great thing about the company who makes Lact-aid is that you can trade in other brands of supplement systems for credit toward a Lact-aid.
In my situation I ended up giving up breastfeeding after about four and a half months due to lingering health issues and complications from my son's birth. I never did regain my supply. This is not the norm for those using the Lact-aid system though from what I understand. I feel my difficulties were due to my illness which can effect hormone's. I am still thankful for having had found the Lact-aid and those 2 extra months that I got to breastfeed with it. It really helped me a lot emotionally. It also helped me immensely because it made me feel like I wasn't just a freak. That there were other mother's out there with the same difficulties. Nobody ever talks about the devastation of the loss of a breastfeeding relationship. But it is very real. The Lact-aid helped me mourn that relationship in a way.
The simple is very easy to use and I would recommend it to anyone having nursing difficulties and is having to supplement with formula.
It was really easy to use once I got the hang of the bag and tubing. It saved me a lot of time which I got to spend with my new baby and not worrying about my milk supply.
