Lanolin is produced by wool-bearing animals like sheep. Some breeds of sheep produce such large amounts of lanolin that the extraction can be performed by squeezing the sheep's wool between rollers.
If you are pregnant Lansinoh Brand Lanolin should be on your list of things that you want to have before you have your baby. Normally breastfeeding does not hurt immediately, however within that first week you will find that your nipples become very sore. A time will come when the baby latches on and you feel like you are going to hit the ceiling from the shock of the pain. Breastfeeding can sometimes be uncomfortable but it doesn't have to be painful. I have used a generic brand of lanolin for sore nipples and although it helped the Lansinoh brand works wonders.
When you purchase Lansinoh Brand Lanolin it may seem like it is an awful lot of money for such a small amount, about eight and a half dollars for two ounces, but you don't have to use that much at a time. I have been breastfeeding for almost ten months now and I am still on the same 2 oz. tube. I don't anticipate that I will have to replace it before I am no longer breastfeeding either. I needed it quite a bit in the beginning but soon I didn't even have it in the diaper bag if I went some where, but I wasn't about to throw it away. When my baby had cut teeth on both his top gums and bottom gums I kept the lanolin a little bit closer.
Let me tell you, it has yet again been a lifesaver as the day came when my baby did stop suckling for a moment and bit down while he was being nursed. Not only was there initial pain from this event but then every time that I was breastfeeding him again I felt like once again I was going to hit the ceiling. I didn't have to be in pain for long though, with the help of Lansinoh Brand Lanolin, and the occasional deep breath at the very beginning of the healing process, I was quite comfortable while breastfeeding. This was a pain that no nursing bra would have helped.
I can't even imagine breastfeeding without it and I would recommend to any mom to make sure that they have Lansinoh Brand Lanolin on hand when they are breastfeeding.
