Product Review: Leapster Digging for Dinosaurs Learning Game

Becky D
Leapster is a great electronic learning system for children. It feels like a video game so kids are often interested in playing. There are several learning games that you can purchase to go with the machine so it can be difficult to choose which to get. My son and I enjoy the Digging for Dinosaurs learning game because it is fun for him while teaching him all about dinosaurs.

This game was designed for kindergarten through second grade so it is perfect for kids ages 5 to 8. It is compatible with all of the Leapster systems so you do not have to work about it working with the one you have.

There are six different adventures that teach kids all about dinosaurs. It teaches things such as dinosaur facts, fossil facts, scientific process, map skills, logic and reasoning skills, spatial relations, and matching skills.

I bought this game for my son before his class did their dinosaur unit so he already had a knowledge base for class, allowing him to learn even more. He became interested in dinosaurs after we read a book about them, which caused me to buy this game because I thought it would be something he would like to use. The game teaches how dinosaurs looked, where they lived, and what they ate.

The program teaches by incorporating facts into its games. In one game, children help to find the different kinds of food that different types of dinosaurs eat. This teaches about herbivores and carnivores. There is a maze game where players must navigate to get the dinosaurs back to where they live. Children can also dig for fossils to put together skeletons of their favorite dinosaurs.

I really like that with the new Leapster2, users can connect to the internet and download new games and activities. Another neat feature is that parents can get learning progress reports so that they know exactly what their children have learned.

The Leapster is a great product to bring along for long car rides because it keeps kids entertained in a more informative way than just watching a movie. I am impressed that my son can now talk about dinosaurs and tell me things that I didn't even know.

The point system is a great feature of this game because kids want to keep playing to earn points. The points then unlock eggs full of dinosaur bones which eventually can be constructed into a full skeleton.

Overall, my son enjoys playing this game and I am pleased with the knowledge he has gained from it.
