Lightlife Smart Dogs Veggie Protein Links: Cooking Tips and Suggestions
Lightlife Smart Dogs respond well to cooking on the stove (boiling or frying), in the microwave and on the grill. I don't typically cook food in the microwave that much, but my partner has access to a microwave at work so I often prepare the hot dog buns with his condiments of choice (ketchup and mustard) and put the Smart Dogs in his lunch for him to heat up in the microwave.
My favorite - and, in my opinion, the most flavorful - way to cook Lightlife Smart Dogs Veggie Protein Links is to fry them (dry or with a tiny bit of oil) on the stove. Boiling is also an easy option, but if you boil them for too long, they are prone to fall apart when you try to retrieve them with a fork. Using tongs to gently remove them from the water will remedy this.
I have also cooked them on a grill on several occasions and they come out perfectly, making them a great vegan meat alternative for barbecues.
Aside from serving them in traditional hot dog fashion, Lightlife Smart Dogs Veggie Protein Links are also great for cutting up and making franks and beans and, with zero fat and only 45 calories per serving (one link) they make a great snack on their own.
Lightlife Smart Dogs Veggie Protein Links: Overall
I have tried just about every meatless hot dog substitute on the market and Lightlife Smart Dogs Veggie Protein Links beats them all. In overall taste, texture, and ease of use, Lightlife Smart Dogs are the best meat alternative for hot dog lovers. Smart Dogs have a great texture and are not chewy or dense - like some meat substitutes can be. They make a great snack and are a healthy addition to any vegan or vegetarian diet. Smart Dogs are also a great non-meat protein source for flexitarians or meat eaters looking to limit their meat intake without having to forgo their favorite dishes.

Post a CommentThese are great, I like how they're similar to meat hot dogs in the amount of protein, have a gram of fiber, and are lower in calories, fat, and cholesterol. I found them at Trader Joes for $2.99! Great review :)
Al - that's interesting, I just looked at the package again and I don't see anything on the ingredient list that would necessarily cause headaches. However, they do have soy and wheat gluten, both of which are common food allergens. So, you might want to talk to your health care provider about ruling that out - an elimination diet would likely help you determine if food allergies are the issue. I hope that helps!
I love Smart Dogs and have enjoyed them for years. During the past year, every time I eat them I get a headache. Any answers as to why? Thanks.
Nice!!!
Ooh "flexitarians..." great word... that COULD describe me. I have always been a big Smart Dogs fan.
I like info, calories count and meatless option.
