Product Review: Lightlife Smart Ground Original

Ground Beef Substitute

Leslie Reese, Nutritional Educator
Some Vegetarians and Vegans like to find replacements for their prior favorite meals while others may want to find healthier substitutes for unhealthy foods. There are so many 'meat' replacements on the market, and they can be quite expensive, so how do you know what you should try?

Lightlife Smart Ground Original is advertised as being low fat with all the savory taste of juicy ground beef. The ready to use crumbles can be used for pizza, tacos, stuffed peppers, shepherd's pie, and much more. I was hesitant to try this product because ground beef was never my favorite item to cook and prior to going Vegan, I would only use ground turkey at home. Honestly my husband just could not adapt to eating chili and spaghetti without 'meat' in it. We tried it, loved it, and now use it regularly.

I personally use the Smart Ground Original for chili, spaghetti, and tacos. My carnivorous family loves it as well. The consistency is very similar to ground beef, but I will not say that it tastes like it. It does not taste bad, but you could not make a hamburger out of it and fool someone. Unfortunately, we tried other items previously and found most of them to be slimy for lack of a better description. I am just thankful that it does not smell like it. When being used in highly flavored dishes, like the ones I mentioned above, the flavor of the 'meat' gets lost anyway. I have served chili on numerous occasions to family and at church functions and they had no idea that it was not 'real meat'.

The fantastic part about this product is that it only has 70 calories per serving and no fat. You will not be able to find that in your regular ground beef. On a healthy note, it also has 3 grams of fiber and 12 grams of protein.

If you are looking for a healthy substitute for ground beef, then this is the item to try.

Buddhist vegans do not eat root vegetables such as garlic and onions to answer the previous question.

Why can you not eat onion and garlic? That has nothing to do with whether you are Vegan or not...Just curious!

I congratulate them for their vegetarian products that you produce, there is not doubts that they are an excellent alternative for the health and at the same time for the proteccion of the animals. We the completely Vegans cannot eat them because contain onion and garlic is possible to suppress them or to change them for some of the many other species of preparation? in case not, would then to offer products that do not contain garlic and onion? Thanks by its atencion. Miguel A Gutierrez. Edging Florida, Orlando.

I will have to give this a try. I use ground turkey, but often I think a dish tastes better without meat than using the turkey. I love Morning Star products, so I'll look for this one.
