Product Review: Lion Brand Homespun Yarn

Genie Walker
Since I've started crocheting again, I just can't seem to stop. Since, I've made myself all the scarves I'm going to need for the next 10 years; I've started making scarves as gifts for others. I've bought up several different brands of yarn and made up many scarves. As a matter of fact, I think I'm scarved out. I'm thinking I need to try making hats for awhile. I'll be writing reviews for the different brands I bought.

Today, I'm writing about using Homespun, which is from Lion Brand Yarn. According to the label Lion Brand Yarn is made in the U.S.A. Homespun is so soft it feels like silk, it textured to stand out and the colors are so beautiful; which is why I chose it. I found it at Michaels for $5.49 a skein. I used my 40% off coupon so I was able to buy one of the skeins at a good price. I bought two different colors: Sierra (790-318), which is a mixture of tan and earth tone colors; and Mediterranean (790-347), which is a mixture of olive and different tan colors.

Each skein is 5 ounces making it 185 yards long; so I was able to make one scarf per skein. Homespun is made from 98% acrylic and 2% polyester. What I liked best besides the softness, texture and beautiful coloring is that this yarn could be put into a washing machine and dryer. I'm not into hand washing anything. I just don't have the patience for fragile materials that need to be handled carefully. Lyon suggests that we use either a size K crochet hook or size 10 knitting needles.

I made two different scarves using the same pattern: I just chained until I had it as long as I wanted it, then added about 12 more stitches, because my work tends to shrink as I go. Then I turned the yarn and started from the second loop from the hook and a row of single stitches. I did this for 10 rows. The pattern is simple and it turned out wonderfully. By the way, I used the K sized crochet hook, which made large loops giving each scarf a softer feel. I tested each scarf and found them to be wonderfully warm. If I hadn't already made myself so many scarves I would have kept at least one for myself.

I enjoyed using Homespun a Lion Brand Yarn because there were no problems with tangles; nor was there any broken places where someone tied it back together. I like that a lot. The yarn came out smoothly from the skein. I highly recommend this yarn for anyone.

Now this on the otherhand I so can feel you on! I love to crochet.. generally only do it during the summer though, but love it! I have used Lionsbrand before.. I don't think there is a brand or style of yarn I haven't used! When I frst started years ago there wasn't as many styles, brands or types of yarns out there.. basically you had choices between Redheart or rug yarn..(can't recall who made it) they were the cheapest.. there was maybe one or two more but were priceier... now there are tons of beautiul colors textures you name it!

My mother knits and crochets so I'll have to remember this brand name. Have you done one on yarns to avoid? I'd love to see it.
