Product Review: "I Love This Yarn" by Hobby Lobby

Genie Walker
Last winter I made a hat and scarf that am pretty proud of, but I found as the weather got colder that there was a gap between the hat and the scarf that needed to be closed in a hurry. I especially noticed the gap when the temperature dropped to the 20s. So I thought about how to fix the problem; my solution was a hooded scarf.

I choose "I Love This Yarn" that can only be found at Hobby Lobby because it was so soft and of course the cranberry color is beautiful. The label states "super soft...super savings!" Both statements are true, each 7 ounce skein cost $2.49 regular price. The yarn is 100% acrylic and is made in Turkey for Hobby Lobby. On the label it was recommended that we use an "I" sized crochet hook, so I used "J." I really don't mean to be contrary, I just don't follow orders well - unless that was what I intended to do in the first place.

The name "I Love This Yarn" is true for me, but I really wish they had come up with another name. I feel like I'm doing an Abbott & Costello routine when someone asks me what yarn I'm using. "I love This Yarn" I say. They of course repeat "No, what's the name of the yarn." Again I say "I Love This Yarn." Getting frustrated they say "Yes, I know you love the yarn, but what's its name?" And so on. So Hobby Lobby could you please change the name so I can stop being part of an Abbott & Costello routine.

The simplest way I could come up with to make a hooded scarf was to make a regular scarf then fold it in half and sew up part of one end; that end would become the hood. I started by measuring my head for two things: 1. How many inches from the top of my head to the back of my neck, that turned out to be 11 inches ; 2 . I measured the area I wanted covered from middle of the back of my head to just in front of my ears - I wanted those ears covered, that turned out to be 7 ¾ inches.

Once I got the measurements I needed I chain stitched until it was as long as I wanted it, then added 12 move stitches. I always add the 12 extra stitches because somehow things shrink as I work on them. "Why 12?" you ask. I haven't got a clue, I promise you I can count past 12, but somehow that's the magical number I've come up with. If you do this be sure to measure from the top of your head down instead of starting at the neck like a regular scarf.
I used a single stitch on all the rows, until it was 8 inches wide. To make it interesting looking I use the front post on one row, then the back post on the next row as I crochet. This makes a nice ribbed pattern. I made it 8 inches wide because I wanted to have a little leeway so I could have it wide enough to cover from the back of my head to just in front of my ears, after I crochet the two sides together. Once I had the scarf wide enough. I folded it in half then crochet the first 11 inches. Behold I had a hooded scarf.

Bottom line: I highly recommend this yarn because it is so soft, so beautiful plus it is so easy to work with that any one of any skill level can use it. Just be prepared to show people the label instead of just telling them the name of the yarn.

My daughter and I both love working withn this yarn but have become increasingly unhappy with the quality. We've had several skeins become very thin or pieces tied together in the center. With the price increasing as it has you would think the quality would be better.

Had I known the problem with this store and being the only ones to handle it, I would never had bought it and not shopped Hobby Lobby. My friend is the one making an afgan for my grandson, and they do not have the dye lot for the color that I need. I have never dealt with a store that would not have one of their other stores ship the product to a sister store and I am angry. She has so much of this done and no one seems to have the dye lot anyway. This really makes me angry and I will not shop at this store ever again. Plus the price has gone up from a third world country and I would not have purchased this yarn had I know this.

Lisa - I agree with you about not liking the price of the yarn. I wait until it is on sale or use the 40% coupons that come out in the local newspaper.

I loved this yarn when it first came out. It was 1.99 per skein when I first saw it about 3 years or so ago. Then it started going up. Sometime in 2008 it went up to 2.49. Then it went up to 2.99 and now it's up to 3.49.

Although I find the yarn easy to work with and much softer than most of the other "saver" yarns, it is no longer really in that category.

I like the yarn, but I no longer like the price.

I've noticed the yard even thought it's 4 strands it gets thinner & has alot of tie together's in the middle of it. Is this the norm???

I HATE THIS YARN!! Yes, it is a little softer, but since it is made in a Third World Country, it should be less expensive. It is much higher. AND, it never has a pull string and tangles easily.

I love Hobby Lobby! Unfortunately I don't have one in the small town I live in so I am forced (lol) to drive 35 miles to Houston to shop there. I love it so much I was willing to "hang out" there on several occasions while my husband worked on construction jobs. He would drive his big truck with his bulldozer while I drove his pickup so he would not have to drive the big gas guzzler more than necessary. He got where he would scope out the area of the next job so he could tell me the location of the Hobby Lobby. I am about to begin a project (baby afghan) that requires 7 colors of yarn. I was in Hobby Lobby a week ago and noticed they had all the colors but I forgot my pattern and couldn't remember how much of each color. Sigh... I guess I'll just have to make another trip to Hobby Lobby today. I could shop online like I do for everything else, but it just wouldn't be the same experience.

Hobby Lobby has terrible customer service. If you purchase this brand of yarn, make sure you get plenty for your project. I purchased a color for a project and the local store ran out of it. Come to find out, the color was discontinued. I called around to other Hobby Lobby stores until I found the 6 skeins I needed to complete my project. Guess what? Hobby Lobby won't ship to a customer or to another one of their stores. I'm not driving 6 hours to get 6 skeins of yarn. Guess my project is ruined. I even offered to send a money order along with a prepaid box for them to ship it in. The ONLY way I could get the yarn was to purchase it in the store. To top it off, they wouldn't even hold it for me in case I could get a friend of mine to pick it up that lived an hour from the store.
