Product Review: MAC Liquidlast Eye Liner

Anne Ng
Eyeliners are some of the hardest makeup to apply-one wrong stroke and you've got to clean up the entire eye area and start from scratch by reapplying foundation again and working your way up. Liquid eyeliners especially take some skill and a lot of practice because they're a lot trickier than pencil liners. For one, you need a steady hand, and brushing the perfect stroke is not the easiest thing to do for the novice. Most liquid liners look good when they're freshly applied, but the disappointment comes when the liner starts running and smudges like heavy eye bags only a few hours later. That's where MAC's new Liquidlast line picks up.

The product's name is telling in itself, and MAC claims that the Liquidlast is a liner that lasts! They say it's a non-smudge and non-flake precision eyeliner. This can't be truer, as I found that the Liquidlast is industrial strength liner! Its staying power rivals that of my Christian Dior liner (that costs five times as much). It doesn't smudge easily and stays on enough to last you the night without having to retouch. If you leave it on long enough, I've found that it starts to cake and eventually smudges, but for regular nights out, it does an excellent job of lining your eyes and not inflicting nasty smudges across your eyes.

Its strength, conversely, is also its downfall. This liner really does last, so long that it's deathly difficult to remove! The first time I used this liner, my eyelids were all red and sore from all the rubbing I had done to take it off. Even MAC's Pro Eye Make Up remover couldn't do the trick. This liner isn't water soluble, and I've found that a good face cream does a better job of removing it without the irritation. It does still take a good rubbing to completely wash it off, and this is the only downside to this liquid liner.

But MAC got very creative and smart. With their Liquidlast line, you'd find colors and colors of liners you wouldn't be able to get anywhere else. Breaking away from the monochromatic black or brown, they offer liners in a wide palette of vibrant colors that you'll likely have a hard time trying to decide which one to get. From plum to aqua to fuschia, it's almost like eye candy, really, which is why I'd still go for the Liquidlast over other liners any day. And at $16.50 a pop, it doesn't hurt to indulge in a few different colors at least!

This is the best liquid liner for what it cost. It stays on forever and all it takes is baby oil and a cotton swab to take off. You can't beat this product. LOVE IT!!!
