Product Review: Magnavox MWD 2206 DVD Player / VCR

Terry Edwards
Our family recently seen the demise of our old VCR and was forced to find a new one. What we really needed was not just a VCR, but also a DVD player so that we could pop in our favorite VHS tape or DVD without having to have separate players for each system. We found the Magnavox MWD 2206 DVD Player/VCR to fill the bill nicely.

I was looking to find a DVD/VCR player that was not too expensive since our young kids would be using it much more than my wife and me. We searched at a few of the larger electronic stores, but couldn't find exactly what we were looking for in the price range we had established. Finally, we made a trip to Wal-Mart where we came across this Magnavox unit that seemed to fit our needs perfectly. The best part was the fact that it only cost $49.95. So, we put it in the cart and took it home.

The Magnavox MWD 2206 comes with the following:

- 4 head VCR player and recorder
- DVD player
- Video and audio connections
- Remote control

Some of the features with this unit include the ability to use slow motion in viewing VHS tapes as well as a comprehensive on screen menu that allows you to tape your favorite TV shows on a daily or weekly basis. So if you are a fan of watching Dallas you can tape it everyday at the same time automatically. This is a nice feature for our daughter who likes to watch Curious George every day but can't since she is in pre-school. Now she can when she gets home in the afternoon. I was able to program the VCR setting in less than 5 minutes my very first time.

Now I will be the first to admit that when it comes to hooking up various types of electronics, I'm not the best at it. But, the Magnavox DVD and VCR player was not too difficult to hook up. By simply connecting my existing cable to the back of the unit and then on to my TV I was up and running in less than 10 minutes. With the additional connections in the back of the player you can also easily play your tapes from a video camcorder you may be using. That's a handy feature we also use.

If you are looking for an inexpensive combination DVD player and VCR then you should take a look at the Magnavox MWD 2206. I give it a thumbs up all the way around.

I bought the Magnavox MWD around Easter 2009 from Wal Mart because our old VCR had conked out and we wanted to watch holiday programs on our VCR. Not only was it affordable, but all the extra features, such as the built-in DVD player were a nice bonus.
