Product Review: Magnavox Portable DVD Player

Entertainment has become extremely convenient in recent years. TV's and DVD players have become smaller and less expensive than they use to be. In fact, we now have the ability to purchase portable DVD players that we can take with us wherever we go. Having a TV in every room in the house, including the bathroom, has become quite normal for most households. Now that TV's and DVD players appear in almost every room of the house, most people want to save money and buy cheaper DVD players instead of investing in fewer more expensive ones. These days, you can find basic DVD players at places like Wal Mart and Target for as low as 30 dollars. However, even though some DVD players sell for only 30 dollars, we still expect them to last a considerable amount of time. Buying a 30 dollar DVD player that will only last three months isn't worth the money. But how do you know which brands to stay away from? Based on my personal experience, the Magnavox Compact DVD Player that sells at Wal Mart for 29.99 is not worth the money.

Over the past year, I have gone through four Magnavox DVD Players. Each one lasted between three and six months. When I buy an electronic product, I expect it to last longer than that. I was amazed that these DVD Players would wear out so quickly and without any warning. One day they worked; the next day they didn't. The DVD player just stopped reading the discs. At first, I didn't pay much attention to the brand of the DVD players I purchased because I was only interested in the price. However, when the fourth one broke the other day, I realized they were all Magnavox DVD Players. Apparently, this brand of DVD Player isn't made to last more than a few months.

I tried taking the last two I purchased back to Wal Mart in hopes for exchanging them, but they refused to take it back. I've never seen Wal Mart refuse to take a product back. They claimed it was because I didn't have my receipt, but I've taken items back to Wal Mart in the past without a receipt and had no problems exchanging it. I can't help but wonder if Wal Mart knows this brand of DVD player is worthless and that's why they won't take it back.

So, if you're looking for an inexpensive DVD Player that will last for a reasonable amount of time, I would recommend avoiding the Magnavox Compact DVD player. You would do better spending a little more money on a brand that will last longer.

Good review, I have one of the magnavox models, but not portable and haven't had any problems with it. I got it for $36 after going through 3 Sony box models in 2 years. Good luck with your next article!
