Product Review of Manischewitz Low Calorie Borscht

Borscht is a Borscht is a Refreshing, Low Caloric Beet Soup Eaten Cold at Any Time of the Year

Sondra C
I recently moved to another area of Florida. I bought a Villa on a Golf Course. One of the first things I did was to unpack. The second was to find a Publix Supermarket near to me.

This was quick and easy. There was a large Publix about a mile or so from me. My refrigerator was bare and so were my kitchen cabinets so so I decided to pay this Publix Supermarket a visit and introduce myself to the store manager. I quickly made friends.

Not being familiar with the lay-out of the store it took me longer to locate the foods I use. This gave me a chance to check out the store for foods I never used before in my old Publix store.

One of the food items I noticed, as I walked up the first aisle, (it was marked Ethnic foods), were jars of Manischewitz Low Calorie Borscht. I had not eaten this in a long time. I remembered that my grandmother used to make beet soup from scratch.

I smiled to myself as I recalled all the pots and pans she used in those days, and all I had to do was to pick up a jar from the aisles in Publix. This was so much easier, I thought, and I wondered if it tasted as good. By the way this product is Kosher.

I was soon to try it. I put a jar of Manischewitz Low Calorie Borscht into my shopping cart and went on with my shopping.

As I walked up and down the aisles looking for new food discoveries I wondered why they called this Low Calorie Borscht? All Borscht is low calorie. In fact, all it contains is Beets, a salt, citric acid and saccharine. A cup contains only 15 calories.

To further enjoy this Manischewitz Low Calorie Borscht you have to add a heaping spoon of Breakstones sour cream into it and lightly stir. Break up a few crackers and toss them in, pick up a spoon and enjoy!! It is that good!

Trust me when I say, this is really delicious.

I thought about it as I walked and decided I could not wait until I got home and had some. I left the rest of my shopping for another time, headed my shopping cart towards the dairy case and bought a container of Breakstone's Sour Cream, walked to the check-out counter and went directly home.

For those who have never tried this, give it a chance - trust me it is a refreshing cup of soup and relatively inexpensive. I paid $2.39 for a 24 fl. oz. Prices vary from store to store.

There is very little difference between the regular and low calorie Borscht. Both are very low in calories and made the same way. It is kosher for Passover and perfect for a snack or meal with broken crackers added.

Though I am not a borsht fan, I have very fond memories of visiting my grandmother in Aventura and going to Publix with her. Thanks for the trip down memory lane : )

What an interesting product!! Great review! :-0 :-) Since I am a sour cream fan, this sounds good to me.

Borscht soup is a clear thin soup and has, on the bottom, small diced beets so it has to be stirred if you want them in the borscht. It has a nice sweet taste and is delicious and great on hot summer days. Add a hot boiled peeled potato for a more filling meal. Add the sour cream - a must- and not the cheap kind - use the best - I like Breakstones.
The taste is delicious with no aftertaste.

It is a Jewish dish, and also used in Russia a lot. It is refreshing and is a great low caloric snack as well.

First of all I love Publix and we do not have them in Chicago but when we go to Florida, we always shop in the store. Second, I see the Borscht in the store but never buy it and I remember my Grandma use to give it to me when I was young...I think you have inspired me Sondra to give it a try again! :)

Oh, cool--so glad I found this... My grandmother raised me, and she made borscht from scratch. I remember particularly liking the soft, cooked leaves in the soup; really tasted good. Sometimes she'd serve it cold, and we'd mix in sour cream; really good combination that way. Other times she'd serve it hot, with slivers of beef, and that was my favorite. Haven't found any store brands I've liked since then, but on your recommendation, I'll have to try this one. Thanks!

hmm, Since I can use all the calories I can get, I'll skip the saccharine and add an extra dollop of sour cream. Good Review!
