Product Review of Moon Sand

Moon Sand has been on of the hottest toys of the season for the last two years. Better than Play-Doh. Never dries out. Mold it and shape it. Those are just some of the lines they use to get your attention on the Moon Sand commercials. My youngest son, who just turned 7, got Moon Sand for his birthday. He actually got a lot of it, a huge 7 ½-pound bucket with a blow up container and a bunch of other colors in smaller containers.

We opened up the Moon Sand the day after his party. I decided to open the big bucket of it first since that is where the little "sandbox" is. I blow it up and there is about a 12 inch by 15-inch play area inside to contain the Moon Sand. Not to bad of a size for one kid to play in, but it is too small to hold all the Moon Sand that comes with it. We open it up and pour the Moon Sand inside. Being a boy of course, the first thing he grabs is his trucks to drive up mountains and bury in the sand. He could careless about molding it into shapes or whatever else they claim it can do. He does however keep telling me that Moon Sand never dries out. I guess he has seen the commercials enough to know this.

The Moon Sand does keep him busy for about an hour or so. Making roads, mountains, and volcano's for his trucks to drive through. When he is done playing, I go evaluate the mess. There is some moon sand on the floor and the colors do not stay separated as they show on TV. The blue and red that he started with is now a purple color.

My 3-year-old niece came over and saw the Moon Sand. She wanted to play in it like she does with the Play-Doh. So we get out the molds and start to play a bit. The shapes molded nicely and slid right out of the molds, but they do not hold together they way they appear to on TV. They fall apart as soon as you pick them up. She was not too impressed by the whole thing.

My recommendation would be this. If you have carpeting or are a neat freak this is not a product you want in your home. It is messy and can be difficult to get out of carpeting. Luckily, my floors are laminate and I can sweep it right up. The Moon Sand is something that boys seem to enjoy more than girls. If you want to try it out I would recommend buying a small container of it before purchasing a lot. Each child seems to be different but just remember just because they like Play-Doh; it does not mean Moon Sand will be a sure thing.

Thank you thank you thank you! My kids have been begging for Moon Sand, but it looked just way too messy for me. I have enough mess without sand in my carpets! Thanks for the informative article.

Cool review, but I wish you had a link to the product or were more specific about what it's supposed to do. Is it clay? Is it sand? I guess their saying it's both.
