Nature's Recipe makes various types of food for your canine friend. One type of dog food they make is a Healthy Skin Vegetarian Recipe. The dry kibble dog food chosen for this review came in a large 37.5 pound bag. The manufacturer claims that the Vegetarian Recipe is easily digestible and contains no beef, corn, wheat, or artificial preservatives.
Of course, the Vegetarian Recipe does not contain any meat products whatsoever. Nature's Recipe claims that the Vegetarian Recipe "provides the same essential nutrients found in diets with meat as the protein source."
Why Vegetarian Dog Food?
Perhaps you are vegetarian. You would like to go the extra step of providing your beloved canine companion the same healthful, cruelty-free diet. Dogs are omnivores just like humans and can adapt quite readily to a balanced vegetarian diet.
If your dog has food intolerances, trying this Vegetarian Recipe food may be appropriate as well.
Bridget, the Greyhound, Puts the Healthy Skin Vegetarian Recipe to the Test
When I first opened the bag, I noticed the light brownish colored kibble smells quite good. Most other types of dog food I have smelled have not seemed so appetizing.
Over a year and a half ago, we adopted Bridget, our wonderful retired racing Greyhound dog, through a rescue group in the Oklahoma City area called, adorably, Hounds of the Heartland. Bridget is not the most ravenous eater. We always keep food in her bowl, and she never abuses that privilege by packing on pounds. In fact, most greyhounds are so naturally slim that the issue is whether they might be underweight rather than overweight, especially when they have come fresh from the racetrack. My brother and sister-in-law's pug is a completely different matter.
Bridget's former dog food was Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul Adult Dog Formula, which is also a quality dog food. To transition Bridget from her former food to her new Vegetarian Recipe, we mixed the old and new food together, gradually adding more of the new food each time. To our delight, Bridget would pick out the new Vegetarian Recipe pieces, leaving the other food pieces for last. She clearly showed a preference for her new Vegetarian food.
Where to Buy
Nature's Recipe Healthy Skin Vegetarian Recipe can be purchased at your local Petsmart store. We purchased a 37.5 pound bag for $32.99.
If you would prefer to buy elsewhere, the Nature's Recipe website has a handy 'Store Locator' to find your local Nature's Recipe retailer.
The Bottom Line
If you love your dog, consider being kind to other animals and going vegetarian. Nature's Recipe Healthy Skin Vegetarian Recipe is good for your canine friend, and your canine pal will thank you for providing her an easily digestible, delicious food.

Post a CommentI have been a vegetarian for almost 40 yrs and am so pleased to be able to feed my dogs a nutritious blend that has actually eliminated their food allergies and yeast condition. They love the taste and have never been healthier. Thank you Nature's Recipe!
To anyone who doubts that dogs can do well on a vegan/vegetarian diet: I have been feeding Nature's Recipe to my dogs for about 8 years. I have a 16-year-old malamute whose allergies went away completely on it; a 14-year-old golden mix with no health issues; a 12-year-old shepherd mix who has had cancer for about 2 years & is thriving way past her expected time. It is possible to love your animals and not hurt other animals - give it a try!
Word about the cats. Cats who are fed vegetarian diets by well-meaning clients over time have developed SERIOUS heart problems, develop muscular or urinary issues, go blind, and can even die. They're "obligate carnivores" (google it), and I would happily charge anyone who knowingly fed a pet cat or ferret a strict vegetarian diet with animal cruelty, just as I'd do the same for someone who fed only meat to a rabbit. It's wrong for their body. Don't fight nature - all the vegan/vegetarian cat kibbles I've seen out there are NOT approved by any veterinary association, and if you'll notice, most "testimonials" are from people feeding their cats these diets for only a few months - malnutrition can take a while to become physically evident (and do you think they'd post that cats got sick on their food?)
If you want a veggie-capable pet, have a dog, or else a rabbit or other herbivore.
vegetable protein is NOT the same as animal protein, no matter what the label tries to sell you. It's not the same in terms of how the body processes it, or amino acid composition. While the food may compensate by the additional of other amino acids or supplements, it does not change the fact that dogs are more carnivorous than omnivorous, and omnivore does NOT equal "vegetarian".
The vegetarian formula of dog food is best for dogs with meat intolerance (primarily Dalamations) who have this intolerance due to human breeding in the first place.
Whatever you do, never EVER EVER feed a cat a vegetarian diet. They are strict carnivores.
I started feeding my dogs this food about 6 months ago. I have been a vegetarian my whole life but never thought to feed my dogs veggie dog food until my girl dog started getting really bad skin problems (rashes, bumbs and infections) I brought her to the vet and they gave me a bunch of different allergy pills to give her. I hated shoving them down her throat and she didnt get any better. I bought this Natures Recipe Vegetarian food and thought I would give it a try. Within a month she started looking much healthier! Now she is back to normal (except for one permenant bald spot on her poor little nubby tail). Both of my dogs love the food too and they were always very picky!
Great review. I don't have a dog...just 2 cats, one of them who exemplifies the word 'finicky.' It doesn't matter how 'healthy' the food is we buy...it doesn't matter if it has meat or not, she usually sticks up her nose, licks away the gravy and walks away. I have spent (and thrown away) tons of money buying all kinds of food for this cat!! I'll have to check to see if there's a similar type of this food for cats!

sounds like a great idea...thanks for the great review
Excellent review Lori! Thanks for the info on this product!!
Thanks for the comments. Although I had been vegetarian for several years, it didn't occur to me that there would be quality vegetarian dog food available to buy. One of my vegan friends told me she gives it to her dog, and her dog is beautiful and vibrant.
Excellent review!
