Product Review: NU-Foam® Densified Batting

Great Product for DIY Upholstery Projects

I was looking for ways to revive couch pillows that had been squashed into shapeless lumps by a decade of use by teenage couch potatoes. I found a 100% polyester upholstery filling called NU-Foam® Densified Batting and decided that it solved all of my squashed cushion problem. It is an improvement over the familiar chunks of polyurethane upholsterer's foam or the fiberfill batting used for stuffing pillows. It has the best characteristics of each material. Like ordinary polyurethane upholstery foam, NU-Foam® Densified Batting resists squashing. Like polyester fiberfill batting, it can be cut with scissors, split into layers, and washed.

NU-Foam® Densified Batting is a made of compressed layers of polyester fiber. Unlike polyurethane foam, NU-Foam ® Densified Batting doesn't get yellow and crumbly with age, and it doesn't retain moisture. Unlike regular polyester batting or fiberfill it doesn't pack down into shapeless lumps when washed. It is mildew-resistant and water drains quickly through the coarse fibers of the batt.

The combination of squash-resistance, mildew resistance, and washability makes this product ideal for projects that will be exposed to spills, leaks, rain, teenagers, or babies.

Tips for using NU-Foam® Densified Batting :

  • Don't use your best sewing scissors to cut the batt. The harsh fibers will dull the edges. Use a pair of utility scissors.

  • Cut the thick batts by making repeated shallow cuts, forcing your scissors through the batt at the bottom of the cut. It's impossible to cut through the thick batts all at once.

  • For an extra luxurious feel, cut the NU-Foam® Densified Batting smaller than the inside of the cushion and wrap it in a layer of quilt batting.

  • Wrap a plastic trash bag around the batting to make it easier to slide it into the pillow fabric. Then slide the plastic out and close the pillow.
