Right on the bottle it says that it will even keep away if not kill black widows, not an out and out lie but pretty close. I found a black widow in my kids' sandbox and thought I would conduct a little test with this spray. I got the spider in a glass bowl with a lid and sprayed it with a little Ortho Home Defense Max bug spray. I didn't die right away so I thought "I'll just leave if here for a bit and come back". I came back 10 minutes later and it was still alive and well. I sprayed some more on the spider, it wouldn't die, it wasn't even acting funny. I let this sit for a good hour and finally got really mad, I sprayed enough spray in there to create a pool at the bottom of the bowl. I am not positive but I think the spider actually drowned instead of being poisoned. I'm not kidding, I'm not trying to be funny I witnessed this and was appalled.
I will give Ortho credit, I called them to give them my account of what had just occurred and they were very nice. They offered to give me a free bottle of Ortho Home Defense Max, I politely declined and hung up the phone. This is not a good product and don't count on it to defend places that your kids play. Unfortunately I don't have a good replacement. I think the best way to avoid a lot of spiders taking up residence in and around your house is to keep the perimeter of you house clear of debree like tree limbs and stuff like that. Bugs like to live in places that they can hide and if you avoid these places, the number of spiders will decline.

Post a CommentI have had good results with this stuuf and for killing black widows and brown recluses it all depends on where you live. recently moved from up north (on the bottle says "excluding black widow and brown recluse") to the south where on the bottle says "including black widow and brown recluse). not sure if this is a new change or just because in the north these are rare, i had never seen one till i moved to the south (21 years).
read the bottle again. It says it doesn't work again black widows or brown recluses.
You could try Raid. It kills bugs on contact and when I used it in my crawl space I stopped seeing spiders and other unpleasant bug down there...
I have to agree with Chad.
Problem with house centipedes about 2 years ago. Tried Home Defense Max this year...I found myself chasing the rascal down before it decided to rollover!
Fortunately, I paid $5-$6 for a gallon (now $12-$19)! No, I would not recommend.
This lady using the product for 2 yrs and according to her it does'nt work - you wouldn't need to wait for 2 yrs to find out if something doesn't work would you? Tells you that it does work!!!
hum, I have been using this for 3 years, never in the house, always around the perimeter and along the fense. It seems to really work for at least 8 months if not a full year. I even know when it's time to spray again because I start to see bugs again in the house. Spray around the perimeter and they are gone until next year. Now, this stuff doesn't kill black widows, says that right on the bottle, nothing kills those buggers accept a blow torch (no joke). But this amazing concotion is worth every penny- sorry the original poster didn't think so!!
My sister recommended it and swears by it, so it bought it and I thought it worked great. I found tons of dead bugs in my basement within a couple days after spraying it. Before that they were running around alive and well! I would highly recommend this product!!
