Product Review: Oscar Mayer Deli-Creations Hot Sandwich Melts

Turkey and Cheddar Dijon and Steakhouse Cheddar Sandwiches

Teresa Wilson
Thanks to an article posted over at Gather.com in their Breakroom Group, and Oscar Mayer, I received two free coupons in the mail for a new product to taste and to review, Oscar Mayer Deli Creations Hot Sandwich Melts. It's a hot sandwich melt that the box advertises as being a complete sandwich. I have to agree with that statement, it is definitely a complete sandwich as it comes with meat, cheese, bread and condiments.

Our local area stores didn't carry a wide selection of the Deli Creations sandwiches plus I don't eat pork products so I was a little limited in my sandwich flavor selection but I didn't find this to be a major problem. The two sandwiches that I ended up buying to taste-test are the Oscar Mayer Deli-Creations Turkey and Cheddar Dijon and Steakhouse Cheddar. You can find Deli-Creations in the refrigerated section of your local grocery store. WinCo Foods and Wal-Mart had the Deli Creations Sandwiches priced at $2.50 each.

Everything you need to make your Deli Creations sandwich comes inside the box. The first thing you do is pull the top off of the box and take out the individually wrapped packages of meat, cheese, bread and condiments. The Turkey and Cheddar Dijon sandwich comes with smoked turkey breast, cheddar cheese, Harvest wheat sub roll, Kraft light mayonnaise and Grey Poupon Dijon mustard. The Steakhouse Cheddar sandwich comes with roast beef, cheddar cheese, Kraft steakhouse sauce, Kraft light mayonnaise and a country white sub roll.

After the sandwich is assembled, you put it inside the box it came in because the bottom of the box has a small square gray area of microwavable material to help the sandwich to heat properly. The instructions call for the sandwich to be heated for 50 seconds to one minute or until the cheese begins to melt.

Once I tasted my Deli-Creations Turkey and Cheddar Dijon sandwich, I was very pleasantly surprised at how good it was. The bread was soft and tasty and the turkey breast was very good. It was flavored just right, not too salty and it tasted like turkey. Perhaps that statement sounds odd, the turkey tasted like turkey but I mean that it tasted like good turkey and not like overly processed lunch meat (which I do NOT like at all!). There was just enough mayonnaise and Dijon mustard to put on each side of the roll, one condiment on each side. The cheese was good and I thought the mustard added a delicious touch to the sandwich.

The Oscar Mayer Deli-Creations Steakhouse Cheddar sandwich is my favorite flavor of the Deli Creations. The roast beef smells and tastes very good and there is plenty of it. I did fold each slice in half when I put it on the roll so that it would seem like I had even more meat. I used the entire packet of light mayonnaise and steakhouse sauce, one packet on each side of the sub roll. I did taste the steakhouse sauce before I put it on my sandwich just in case I didn't like it but I did like it so used all of it. The steakhouse sauce has a mild sweet flavor that I thought went well with the roast beef. I did like having the light mayonnaise too, just to add a slight extra layer of flavor. I heated my Steakhouse Cheddar sandwich for a slightly shorter time than it called for, only 40 seconds but this still heated the roll and made the cheese soft which is the way I like my sandwich.

Both the Turkey and Cheddar Dijon and the Steakhouse Cheddar sandwiches have 430 calories each with 140 of those calories coming from fat. I do find that total a little high but since you can add some vegetables (salad, carrot sticks etc) as a side dish and maybe fruit for dessert, you can eat a healthy meal that is both delicious and fast. Deli Creations are perfect to take to work with you and are much tastier than the same old boring burger and fries!

You can find out more information and the ingredients list for the Deli Creations Sandwiches at the Kraft Foods website here.

I'm not sure why but I was a little surprised at how good the Deli Creations Sandwiches are. It seems a little surprising to me that you can buy a complete sandwich in a box at the grocery store (or Wal-Mart), heat it in a microwave for a few seconds, and it comes out tasting delicious.

I like both the Deli Creations Turkey and Cheddar Dijon and Steakhouse Cheddar Sandwiches so much that I have already bought them again, even without a coupon, and I will be buying them again in the future.
