Product Review: Profectiv Anti-Damage Therapeutic Relaxer System

The Pen
I started using this at home hair relaxer kit off and on for about two years now. I first decided to try it because the label claimed that it was the first anti-damage therapeutic relaxer, and it would stop breakage, split-ends, and dryness. It comes with 2 pre-measured, touch-up applications, but it costs the same as kits that only come with one application.

The kit contains 2 packets of anti-damage, no lye cream activators and 2 cups of relaxer base, one DamageFree Neutralizing Shampoo Mousse (so that hair doesn't get tangled and further damaged when you wash the relaxer out), and 2 packets of BreakFree Leave-In Strengthener, along with instructions, plastic gloves, and a mixing stick.

First of all I love the fact that this relaxer contains a cream activator rather than a liquid one, like other relaxers I've used. It makes it easier to mix together because it doesn't spill or slosh out of the container; it also seems gentler than liquid activators which are just liquid chemicals. It goes on just like any other relaxer but it isn't as harsh on my skin as other relaxers I've tried in the past have been. It will burn my scalp slightly if I leave the relaxer on for too long, but it doesn't burn as quickly or as intensely as most relaxers do.

The shampoo mousse is claimed by Profectiv to instantly neutralize the chemicals and stop the relaxing process on contact, and it does. As soon as I apply it to my hair I leave it on for two minutes without rubbing, as stated in the directions, and I do feel an instant difference.

My scalp starts to cool down as soon as the mousse touches it and it provides immediate relief. I do feel that the shampoo is a bit more gentle on my hair because I don't have to work really hard to get it to remove the relaxer from my hair. I can user a gentler touch on my hair and scalp since the mousse immediately starts to foam and break down the relaxer. It will also turn pink if there's still relaxer left in my hair, so I know for sure when to stop shampooing, or if I need to shampoo again.

When I apply the leave-in strengthener, which is basically a leave in conditioner I notice that it definitely softens my hair, but it doesn't deep condition as much as I'd like it to. So I use it first since it's compatible with the other products, but I always rinse it out and apply my usual conditioner to my hair to keep damage and dryness to a minimum.

Though any process that changes the hair chemically inevitably damages it, I do find Profectiv to be one of the best at home relaxers. It helps to make the chemical process as safe a process as possible, and it has helped to keep my hair in great condition. It gets my hair straight but it doesn't strip my hair or leave it lifeless. I also adore the fact that I can get two touch-up applications for the price of one with this kit. I'd recommend Profectiv's Anti-Damage Therapeutic Relaxer System to any African-American woman who chemically relaxes her hair, but wants a more gentle relaxing experience.

I had my first weave when I was 15 years old. I have been addicted ever since. I have worn every type of braid, or weave application possible. Up until 1 year ago. I was such a weave addict I would buy all kinds of magazines to take to the stylist for my next weave style. Sew-ins, interlocking, strand-by-strand, I have had them all. Ranging from $100-$500. One day, I was in the Beauty supply, about to purchase 2 packages of 14" curly extensions, I saw this woman with a huge, gorgeous, healthy afro! at first I thought it was an afro wig, but when I went up to the african goddess, she allowed me to see for myself that it was ALL her natural hair!! She assured me thst she was not mixed, and didn't have a trace of indian in her family. I We stood talking in the beauty Supply for at least 20 min. She told me to stop killing my hair and that I too, could have beautiful, natural manageable hair. She suggested that I cut out the perm and start from absolutely scratch: She told me to get a

I think that everyone should be persuaded in their own mind what they feel is right to do with their OWN hair. God will not judge us based on whether or not we choose to relax our hair or stay natural, either way, this won't get us into heaven. Kutos to all my natural sistahs out there and double kutos to all those brave enough to bear the process of enhanced beauty. Even natural hair need a little help, moisturizers, oils, etc. I also love this review.

I think it's ridiculous. Another marketing scam just to get black women to continue to put chemical fire cream on their scalps. Does anybody ever stop and think that you are putting a product in your hair that requires gloves and a spatula to apply? Does anybody ever think why would I want to put something on my scalp that burns? I know of something that can give you the best hair ever. Long, healthy and thick hair. You will get everybody's attention. It's natural hair. My sistah's, you don't have to have straight hair to be beautiful. Try it. God didn't make any mistakes when he made our hair.

Your review is very helpful because I have been thinking of using it after seeing it at the beauty supply.
