Product Review: Prometheus Drop Ashtray

A Delightful Work of Art, Which Will Complement Your Cigar Accessories

I received the Prometheus Drop Ashtray as a present for my birthday several years ago. I had never heard of the Prometheus brand before, much less the line of ashtrays they produced for cigars. I did a little research and was astounded by both the price and the quality behind the product Prometheus produces.

According to the company's website, http://www.prometheuskkp.com, Prometheus crystal ashtrays are 100% pure crystal and hand-made in Tuscany by master artisans. The retail price of these ashtrays starts with the Drop line, priced at $150, and ranges up to $195 for several models. However, you can find the Prometheus Drop ashtray online for as low as $100.

A quick scan of other Prometheus products, such as the bone china ashtrays, or the Prometheus line of cigar humidors, lighters, cigar cases, and other cigar accessories, leads you to believe that Prometheus charges a huge premium. For a company established in 1992, there is not a lot of tradition or history, compared to the rest of the cigar industry, where companies are known for being passed from generation to generation within a single family. An example of such a family is the Fuente family, especially renowned for its line of Fuente Fuente OpusX cigars (see my other article on this line of cigars at: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/5724198/good_drink_and_good_cigars_fuente_fuente.html). Further review of the Prometheus website shows a line of accessories produced under the Fuente Fuente OpusX brand, as well as other brands, such as Ashton, Romeo Y Julieta, and others.

Is the quality of the Prometheus ashtray worth such a premium? After all, it's just an ashtray for cigars. Its sole job is to hold cigar ash. I definitely think that I would not have purchased an ashtray like the Prometheus for myself, since I do not have the opportunity to smoke cigars often, and my money could be better put to use on something that doesn't hold cigar ash. However, I do believe that as a present for Father's Day, Christmas, or a birthday, the Prometheus ashtrays make an extraordinary present for a loved one who wouldn't purchase one for themselves.
