Puffins Original Cereal by Barbara's Bakery can usually be found in health food stores and natural sections of grocery stores. The cereal has a puffed-square shape. There are 13 servings in the 12-oz box. I paid $3.19 for the box.
The box states that Barbara's Bakery is committed to providing the highest quality and best tasting foods. They are also committed to making a positive contribution to the world and have donated more than one million dollars plus time and energy to both local and national nonprofit organizations.
Puffins cereal got its name from the bird of the same name. There is some information about Puffins (the birds) on the box, along with an opportunity for a school or organization to "Adopt-A-Puffin" by saving boxtops.
Nutrition Information
This is a corn-based cereal with both corn flour and corn bran flour. It also has oat flour in it. Although the box says that the cereal is wheat free, it also states that the cereal is made on equipment that manufactures products containing wheat, so it may not be the best choice for those with Celiac Disease or gluten intolerance.
It is sweetened with unsulphured molasses. This cereal has some added oil which is listed as either Canola or Sunflower oil, but there are no hydrogenated oils or trans fats in it. There is only 1 gram of fat per serving, which equals 2% daily value, so this product is considered low fat. The box states that it is dairy free and vegetarian. I don't see any animal products listed at all, so I'm not sure why they didn't state that it was vegan.
Each 3/4 cup serving provides only 90 calories, 2 grams of protein, a whopping 5 grams of fiber and only 5 grams of sugar. One serving provides a daily value of 10% Vitamin C and 2% Iron.
Taste
I ate this cereal with rice milk and I really enjoyed the flavor. It has a taste similar to graham crackers and is not overly sweet. This cereal is very crunchy and stayed crispy right down to the bottom of the bowl. I also tasted the dry cereal out of the box and found that it tasted good that way too. I think that it would be a tasty and healthier addition to one of those cereal party mix recipes.
Final Analysis
I felt that this was a very tasty cereal even though it isn't overly sweet. I really like the fact that it is sweetened with unsulphured molasses which is more nutritious than sugar. I think that this cereal is a healthier choice than some of the more popular cereals found in the grocery store based on the low calorie content, the low grams of sugar, and the high fiber. I would definitely choose this cereal as a part of a healthy lifestyle.

Post a CommentMmmm....I love puffins, the birds, and I love this cereal. I was introduced to it a few years ago when one of my students brought it in for snack. We stirred it into Stonyfield Fat Free French Vanilla Yogurt -- a super-yummy and healthy snack!!
Great review :) Sheri

Mmm, this really sounds good! I must admit I've never heard of a Puffin. :-)
Sharon,
Thanks for the great review. I had never seen Puffins cereal before and wonder if it is available in my area. I'll have to check the health food store's cereal section next time I am there. Thanks!
