Rival 17 quart roaster oven features:
Large 17 quart capacity.
Cooks up to an 18 pound turkey.
Removable enamel-on-steel roasting pan for easy clean up. The roasting pan will easily hold up to an 18 pound turkey!
Removable steel roasting rack which allows for easy food removal.
Removable lid and convenient lid rest.
Cool touch handles.
Thermostat ranging in cooking temperatures from 150 degrees to 450 degrees.
When you first remove it from the box, the instructions tell you to wash the roasting pan and the roasting rack to remove any residue from the shipping process. You must also wipe clean the Rival 17 quart roaster oven as well. The instructions also mention that the first time the appliance is plugged in and heated that there will be some smoking, with an unpleasant odor, but this is normal. There was definitely smoking and an odor, which lasted for about 20 minutes. Once it stopped, there was no repeat of this event.
I prepared my fresh ham for cooking, while my Rival 17 quart roaster oven was pre-heating to 350 degrees. I then placed my ham in the oven, replaced the lid, which by the way has two small slits for steam to be released, and started the waiting process for my ham to cook. I have to admit, that I just couldn't resist taking a peek, every so often, to smell the delicious aroma and see how well my new Rival 17 quart roaster oven was performing.
After removing the lid, I thought that it might take quite a while for the oven to re-heat back to my 350 degree setting, but I was very surprised how quickly this was accomplished. It took no more than 5 minutes for it to re-heat to the set temperature.
Finally the moment arrives. My fresh ham is ready to be removed from the oven. The wire roasting rack made the removal very easy, as it has two handles specifically for this purpose. My ham smells wonderful, its a beautiful golden brown, and extremely juicy! The instruction manual states that you may need to place your food into a conventional oven for approximately 30 minutes for optimal browning, but this was not needed for my ham. It was perfect!
My ham was very flavorful, moist, juicy and melt in your mouth tender. I just can't say enough good things about my Rival 17 quart roaster oven. I cant wait to cook a turkey or maybe a brisket or even some ribs to see how well this product performs with these.
If you are wondering about the clean-up? A piece of cake. The enamel coating allowed for an easy clean up, that took very little time. The only draw back is the size of the roasting pan, made it a little awkward to handle. But this was not too inconvenient.
All in all I am very impressed with my purchase of the Rival 17 quart roaster oven. A must have for the low price of $22.00.
