Product Review: Rushcard Prepaid Visa Debit Card with Credit Building Feature

Blair Mathis
The Rushcard is a prepaid visa card that works just like a debit card, and is marketed primarily towards individuals who need to build or repair their credit but can't or don't want to take out a credit card. You can sign up for credit reporting, which reports positively to Lexus Nexus everything you pay one of your bills with the Rushcard.

You don't have to have poor credit to get this card, however-it is available to anyone. Some of the benefits of having a prepaid card is not having to worry about losing your bank card (which can take six weeks to replace) while on vacation, to give someone a large cash gift who may not have a bank account to deposit it in, and for high school students to have their own emergency money, and for college students heading out on their own for the first time.

If you're in need of a prepaid visa card, read on to find out if the Russell Simmons Rushcard is the right prepaid Visa choice for you.

Features

You can choose from two different plans, one that has a monthly fee and one that does not. The main differences between the two plans are the fees for using the card.

Each plan type comes with two different types of card options, one that is 'girly' (pink and/or purple) for the ladies, and a black one for the men.

These cards can be have money transferred to them directly from your bank account, from your Paypal account, they accept direct deposit of your paycheck, and you can send then a check and have it put on the card. Overall, the Rushcard offers more options for money transfer than any other prepaid card I have seen.

Fees

There is an activation fee of $19.97, which is higher than any other prepaid card I have ever seen. The basic plan doesn't have a monthly fee, which the premium account does (approx. $6 per month).

Conclusion

Though this card has a higher activation fee than I've seen on any other prepaid visa card, it does offer a couple of convenient features: credit reporting for bill paying, which allows you to build up good credit without having to get a credit card (and essential for those who can no longer take out loans or credit cards), and the ability to transfer money to the card directly from Paypal, a feature many people enjoy due to the throw-away nature of the card (if you don't use Paypal often, it is easiest to transfer the money to a prepaid card you use occasionally).
