Product Review: Russell Stover Internationale German Black Forest Truffle

Laura Brady
I recently tried Russell Stover's Triple Chocolate Mousse chocolates. The chocolate was quite delicious so I decided to taste the German Black Forest Truffle chocolates from their "Internationale" line of chocolates. I love cherries and dark chocolate so I was anxious to see if these truffles would live up to my decadent expectations.

The chocolates come in a foil bag with a picture of a German town and a large slice of chocolate black forest cake on the front. I must say I would love to be able to taste the thick wedge of five layered dark chocolate cake frosted with whipped cream and topped with cherries! The bag of chocolates is 4.95 ounces (140 grams), the serving size is three pieces (38 grams0, and there are about three and a half servings per bag. A serving contains 200 calories, 12 grams of fat, 7 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams of trans fat, less than 5 milligrams of cholesterol, 20 mg of Sodium (1% of the RDA), 21 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of dietary fiber, 17 grams of sugars, 2 grams of protein, 2% of the RDA of Vitamin A, 4% of the RDA of Calcium, and 8% of the RDA of Iron.

The squares of chocolate are individually wrapped in green foil wrappers, which open easily. As I bit into the chocolate I tasted the subtle essence of cherries in the dark chocolate center. The top layer is dense dark chocolate, the middle layer is a creamy truffle mixture, and the bottom layer is smooth milk chocolate. It tasted deliciously rich and the three layers of chocolate supremely satisfied my chocolate craving. I had been hoping for actual cherry bits in the truffle filling, but the subtle hint was actually quite nice. They tasted a little bit like a flourless chocolate cake; dense, dark, and all chocolate. All in all I loved these chocolates and would buy them again.

Russell Stover has two other flavors in their Internationale category; Swiss Lodge Mocha Cream and French Café Vanilla Crème. Their package infers that new flavors will be forthcoming when they state, "Where to next...England, Italy? The South Pacific? Travel with us as we celebrate the tastes of the world." This won't be a problem for me, although it might for my waistline. However, as these chocolate squares of delight are individually packaged I hopefully will be able to practice portion control. I also think that they might make great stocking stuffers.
