Product Review: Samsung L210 Digital Camera

James Gapinski
The Samsung L210 Digital Camera is a low-cost point-and-shoot model designed for casual photographers. The camera features 10.2 Megapixel resolution, meaning that crisp, clear pictures can be expected at least through 8x10 print sizes. The camera has 3x optical zoom and 3x digital zoom-in theory, this adds up to a full 9x zoom, but in reality a digital zoom simply crops images resulting from the optical zoom, thereby leading to lower quality. The camera also has face detection technology, white balance controls, video capabilities and an image stabilization mode. Overall, it appears to be packed with some of the best features available to consumers looking for a lower-cost camera.

While the features add up to an impressive list, the Samsung L210 Digital Camera's main weakness is in its use of those features. While easy zooming and impressive auto-focusing makes for easy casual shooting, adjusting the image for low-light, a shaky environment, or close-ups is no easy task. Adjusting white balance is not very straightforward, and it takes a lot of trial and error to get the right balance. Image stabilization must be manually activated whereas many other digital cameras on the market automatically stabilize images-be prepared for some initial blurred pictures until you get in the habit of turning on the stabilization. Furthermore, the scene options, including close-ups, night scenes, portrait, sunset, text, and others, are not initially self-explanatory.

The good news is that the Samsung L210 Digital Camera comes with a comprehensive user's manual. It will definitely take some studying and some practice to get the most out of the camera's features, but it is doable with a little work. The camera is not as user friendly as it could be, but it still gets the job done.

Despite the lack of photographic user-friendliness, the Samsung L210 Digital Camera does make use of some easy computer connectivity. Since most digital camera users utilize computers for cropping, touching up, and other such actions, the L210's connectivity features are a big plus. It comes with free software for easy organization of pictures, and it also features direct printing capabilities with any printer featuring PictBridge capabilities. Furthermore, the camera can be plugged directly into a PC using a USB cable, so users do not need a digital card reader to access their images.

Overall, the camera lacks some user-friendliness, but its functionality is impressive enough to entice even novice photographers to learn how to use its features. The camera is packed with a lot of decent offerings for a very modest price.
