Product Review: Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG9 9.1 Megapixel Pocket Camcorder

Blair Mathis
Released in 2008, the Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG9 is a 9 megapixel digital camcorder small enough to fit in your pocket. Unlike many of the other camcorders in Sanyo's Xacti line, the VPC-CG9 is a standard-definition camera with a price point of $280, though it often sells for less online, especially used.

If you're in the market for a pistol-shaped camcorder that fits in your pocket and weighs practically nothing at all, read on to find out if Sanyo's Xacti VPC-CG9 is the right camera for you.

Features

Features are standard, if not a little disappointing. Though many cameras are available today that record in at least 720p HD, this camera does not. The CG9 records at a fairly low 640x480 pixels, which is the same resolution used for VHS tapes, and has an aspect ratio of 4:3. The image quality is very good, but is prone to a warble effect due to lack-luster image stabilization.

The camera has an ISO range from 50 to 1600, though the auto mode will only take the ISO to 400, which might not be adequate for dark shots. The exposure can also be manually controlled and changed in increments of 1/3EV. All movies are recorded with an MP4 container.

Video Quality

Video quality is good for a standard definition camcorder, but isn't up to par with most modern camcorders. The videos will upload to YouTube and other sites easily, and are ideal for older and slower computers that can't handle HD video playback.

Image Quality

Image quality is decent, though half the images were fuzzy. There is a substantial amount of ISO, also, which becomes very noticeable if you are heavy with the post-processing. Though suitable in a pinch, you will get much, much better images from a digital camera in this same price range.

Conclusion

The VPC-CG9 is an average camcorder with basic features; it lets you adjust ISO and exposure, it has zoom, and the ability to take both videos and still images. With that said, I recommend avoiding this camera unless you get a good price for it. At $280 suggested retail price, you can get a HD camcorder from Aiptek or similar companies and have much higher video quality.
