Product Review: Scar Zone

Ineffective Scar Removal Product

Becky D
Scar Zone is a product that promises to reduce the appearance of scars. I chose this product because it was designed to do the same thing as the better known Mederma and it was ten dollars cheaper. I purchased Scar Zone at my local supermarket for $9.69 and now regret choosing it over Mederma (which my friends have had good luck with).

The box says that the product will reduce the visibility of scars and soften to diminish the appearance of scars from surgery, injury, burns, acne, and stretch marks. Of the three active ingredients, the first two (octinoxate and zinc oxide) are sunscreen and the third (dimethicone) is a skin protectant. The SPF15 sunscreens are designed to protect the scars from the sun but apparently are not very useful in reducing the appearance of scars.

To use Scar Zone, you must rub it into the scar twice a day for two to three minutes. If you are using it on multiple scars, this can add up to a significant amount of time.

I tested this product on several types of scars that were both old and new so that I would be able to write a fair review. I have been using Scar Zone twice a day, as recommended, for six weeks now. On the scars that I received as a child, over 15 years ago, such as scraped knees and cuts, the product made absolutely no difference. I also have a couple surgical scars that are raised but not discolored. I stopped using the product on these scars after about 2 weeks because the skin was getting darker and the scars became more noticeable. In trying Scar Zone on some acne scars that were less than a year old, I have noticed about a 20% improvement. For the amount of time I spent using the product, this small improvement is not worth it. The scars simply blend in a little better than they did before.

There are a couple good points to the product. It has hardly any scent. It does make my skin feel softer where I use it but so does regular lotion. The best aspect of this product is the money back guarantee which I will be taking advantage of. They promise to refund my money if I mail in the unused portion of the product, the UPC from the box, and my receipt.

I understand that everyone's skin is different. This product may work wonderfully for you. However, I suggest that you save the receipt so that you can get a refund if you have a similar experience to me.
