Product Review: Smashbox's Heartbreaker Eye Shadow Palette in "Hot Date"

Nina Rotz
Smashbox's Eye Shadow Palette in "Hot Date" is a portable eyeshadow compact and a part of the Heartbreaker Spring 2010 collection. This beauty product contains six high-quality and bright eyeshadow pots: four of the eyeshadow colors are neutral and two are quite dramatic.

"Hot Date" Creme Brulee: A light beige color that works very well as a neutral or base eyeshadow.

"Hot Date" Chestnut: A dark brown with a slight touch of sparkle. A good eyeshadow choice for smoky eyes, creating shadows or for blending over pencil eyeliner

"Hot Date" Champagne: A neutral color with sparkle. I see a hint of gold in this particular eyeshadow. It looks pretty by itself or as highlighter for the inner corner of the eye.

"Hot Date" Azure: First thought was that I would never in my life like this sparkly blue eyeshadow. I was pleasantly surprised to see how beautiful it looked on my eyelids. I used Azure in small amounts as an accent color. I tried it as eyeliner and loved the results. A little of it goes a long way but definitely a stunner. Not recommended for those that dislike dramatic and colorful eye makeup effects.

"Hot Date" Mint: Mint is a blue eyeshadow color even though the name reminds me of green tones. This particular color enhances blue and green eyes. I loved it on my eyelids and it blends perfectly with Azure.

"Hot Date" Warm Taupe: By far my favorite color in the palette. This is a brownish gray color that creates a phenomenal smoky eye effect. It looks pretty on its own or it can be used as a shading color. Versatile and will compliment most eye colors and skin tones.

I preferred to use an eyeshadow primer but it is not required with Smashbox's "Hot Date" palette. The colors are meant for long wear and do stay on for hours. There were no creasing or smudging problems, and required minimum touch ups.

The palette itself is petite: 3.5"wide, 2" high and slightly under 1/2" deep. Besides six eyeshadows, "Hot Date" includes a small brush applicator and a mirror. I like the container size. It is petite enough to fit into a makeup bag for long travels or to keep in my purse for touch-ups. The container fits in the palm of my hand, which makes it very easy to hold while applying colors or creating a makeup effect.

The mirror is a generous size, as large as the palette container, and I found it useful when applying other makeup as well. The small brush was useful in applying a color in the eye lid crease and touch ups. I had to use a high-quality eyeshadow brush in order to apply the "Hot Date" colors. I sometimes had to use more than one brush due to the texture of the product.

I am not as crazy about the texture of "Hot Date" eyeshadow. I find the product to crumble easily. It applies very well on my eyelids and the palette has a bright punch of color. Applying the colors has to be done gradually and in small amounts, otherwise there is fallout on cheeks, around eyes and sometimes on the bathroom counter. Turning the palette upside down or shaking it around in a makeup bag will result in a residue and crumbling.

Overall, Smashbox's Eye Shadow Palette in "Hot Date" provides a high-quality and colorful eyeshadow collection. I found each color bright and pretty on its own, but the neutrals combine into a beautiful smoky eye effect. Both an Azure and Mint colors compliment my eyes and enhance my eye color. I never imagined that I would wear a blue eyeshadow but I do really enjoy the look. At $34.00 retail price, Smashbox's "Hot Date" palette is a high-quality makeup product at an affordable price. Other pieces of the Heartbreaker collection, such as a liquid liner pen and face highlighter, compliment the eyeshadow palette. "Hot Date" is a great color combination and well worth the money.
