First let me start with the easy-to-understand directions. In order to remove the hair from your skin, you attach a "flex-crystal hair removal pad" to the applicator of choice (large for legs, forearms, etc. and small for face, knees, ankles) and then proceed to rub it on your chosen area first three times in a clockwise circle and then three times in a counter clockwise circle. Repeating the process until the hair is completely gone. Seems easy enough, right?
It turns out that removing unwanted leg hair takes more than those six circles in one spot. It took more like twelve for me, and that was just one spot, on one leg, about 6-8 inches in diameter. I stopped after that spot and jumped in the shower for my trusty razor to finish the job. If I'd done both my legs it would have taken me about an hour to get everything smooth and to my liking. Using my razor takes me about 10 minutes.
Pros:
Great for small touch-ups -- Smooth Away really does remove your unwanted hair. Unfortunately, it takes so long to remove the hair that it should really only be used for small areas and/or touch-ups. If you have a big job to undertake, I highly suggest going with your regular method instead.
Exfoliates the skin -- Smooth Away uses "flex-crystal hair removal pads" to remove the hair. However, it resembles a heavy grit sandpaper. And what happens when you rub sandpaper on your skin? That's right, it scraps off the top layer of skin cells from your body. Smooth Away even has a caution with the instructions: Excessive rubbing or pressure when removing hair may cause abrasions to the skin. In other words, don't rub too hard unless you want your legs to look like a major case of carpet burn.
Easy to use -- All you need to know is how to go around in circles. First one way and then the other. Over and over again. Easy peasy!
No Injuries -- With Smooth Away you don't have to worry about those annoying nicks around your ankles and knees. No blood loss is always a positive for anything you use on your body.
Cons:
Takes too long to do entire leg -- Taking ten times the amount I'd normally use to shave my legs was a huge let down for me. If you'd prefer sitting in front of the television and using Smooth Away, then it might have an appeal. However, I'm not into "shaving" my legs in the living room.
Need moisturizer afterwards -- As I stated above, Smooth Away is great at exfoliating. So much so that anywhere you use this product will be white with dried, scratched up flesh. Use your fingernail and scratch a white mark up your leg. Now imagine every inch of your skin that white color. Yep, moisturizer (and lots of it) will be required after every use of Smooth Away.
Doesn't replace a good razor -- This product isn't a replacement for your favorite razor. You'll still want to have a razor handy in case you get tired of how long it takes to use this product. If you decide to use Smooth Away for small areas and touch-ups you'll be much happier with it.
In the end, I'm glad that I didn't actually buy this product. My mother had already wasted money on it and was more than happy to let me try it out before I spent my money. I hoped for better, but am fully capable of saying that Smooth Away does in fact rub the hair right off of your body. Oh, and for the men out there, this product states "DO NOT use on the head or on male beards." Sorry guys, you'll have to stick with your razor for those areas (not that this would feel all that great on your face or head anyway).

Post a CommentThanks for the review, Christie. Sorry to hear it didn't work so well for you.

I remember this product from the early 1980's - repackaged for the 'new generation' - I fell for it back then with same conclusion as you have here. What was old is new again. LOL!
Thanks Christie, I tried a simalar product and had the same results. I wish they would come out with something that actually worked.. wink
I had the same experience with this product. My mother-n-law bought it for me for my birthday because she heard me say I wanted to try it. I wish she hadn't have wasted her money on it. Now it sits in my bathroom and is not being used. I would rather shave my legs or use a hair removal cream. Great and honest review. :)
Great to know, thanks! The last thing I need is to *add* time to my shower routine. :-) Rinsing long hair is time enough.
