I tried using my regular vacuum but it just threw the debris around the floor. Let me tell you if you get hit by a cheerio that is catapulted from your vacuum you will know it. I tried using the hose to get large piles after I had swept them into piles and then sucked them up. This was causing me to have to go over the same spot on the floor several times before it was clean. The vacuum method just didn't work on bare floors.
I then got creative and began using my husbands shop vac on my bare floors. This had great results. The shop vac had a lot of suction and I was able to get the cheerios and raisins up with ease, but it was a a pain to lug around. It also sucked up anything in sight. I was finding that if I got to close to a sock or a toy it would suck it right up with the dust bunnies and food.
My husband brought me home a gift one day. Yes, he bought me a swiffer vac. I think he wanted his shop vac back. At first I was a little p.oed at him for buying me a vacuum, but when I used it it was the answer to my problems. It was able to pick up those cheerios and raisins without a problem and it took care of the dust bunnies all in one swift move. I was only having to go over the floors once and I wasn't loose as many socks. The Swiffer Vac is a must have for bare floors. I wouldn't waste my money buying a regular swiffer when the swiffer vac does the same job and more.
As much as I love the Swiffer Vac, there is one problem. You must follow directions. I did not follow directions when I first got it or several times after that. I did not allow it to charge for the full 24 hours they tell you to. Apparently a battery like this has a memory and if you don't allow it to charge all the way it never will fully charge. I also did not run the battery down after each use before charging it. This too apparently has an effect on the battery. I am now unable to get through my vacuuming before I have to stop and recharge. I know that this is a problem I caused though because my sister has the same vac and apparently she follows directions better than me. She doesn't have this problem at all and we have had them for about the same amount of time.
I would strongly suggest the swiffer vac to any one with bare floors, it is a time saver. You can also go onto the Swiffer website for money saving coupons. Right now they have a coupon for $5 off the swiffer vac. (www.swiffer.com)
